Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Records

The silence in Maya’s office grew so dense I could hear the faint ticking of the wall clock over the hum of the city traffic outside.
I picked up the photograph. Thomas Vance. I knew the name; everyone in legal circles did. He had been a rising star in the Southern District of New York before his car plunged off an unlit overbridge on the Henry Hudson Parkway. The case had been ruled an accident, swept under the rug of routine municipal tragedy.
“Thomas Vance was a federal prosecutor,” I said, looking up at Maya. “Claire was a housekeeper. What did they have to do with one another?”
Maya pulled a folded document from the manila folder and slid it toward me. It was a certified birth certificate, printed on heavy security paper.
Child: Lily Claire Vance. Mother: Claire Bennett. Father: Thomas Vance.
My breath hitched. I stared at the name. Vance.
“Claire wasn't just a domestic worker, Adrian,” Maya said, leaning against her desk, her expression grim. “Before she came to work for you, she was Thomas Vance’s confidential legal investigator. She helped him build a massive federal RICO case against a syndicate deeply embedded in New York real estate and shipping—a syndicate that happens to include the Romano family.”
Pieces of a puzzle I didn't even know I was playing began clicking violently into place.
“When Thomas was killed,” Maya continued, “Claire realized she and her unborn child were next on the hit list. She needed to disappear. She needed a fortress so impregnable that no one would ever think to look for a federal witness inside it. So, she bleached her hair, changed her references, and applied for a job as a housekeeper in the home of Adrian Moretti—a man whose last name alone makes federal agents and mob bosses think twice before knocking on the door.”
I looked back over at the sofa, where little Lily was still sleeping soundly, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
She wasn't just the daughter of my former employee. She was the living, breathing key to a federal investigation that had supposedly died with Thomas Vance four years ago.
“And Vanessa?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet. “Does she know?”
“She suspects,” Maya replied. “Why do you think Vanessa has been pushing so hard to remodel your townhouse? Why do you think she insisted on clearing out the guest rooms and replacing your private security staff with her father’s private contractors? She’s been hunting for the evidence Claire’s investigator files left behind.”
I stood up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.
“Adrian, stop,” Maya warned, stepping in front of me before I could reach the office door. “If you storm back into that townhouse right now and confront Vanessa, you walk right into a trap. They’ve been waiting for someone to surface those documents. If you expose yourself, you put Lily in the crosshairs.”

“Then what do we do?” I demanded.
Maya reached down and tapped the brass key resting on her desk. “We open Box 204. Because inside that safety deposit box isn't just proof of corporate fraud. It’s the digital backup of Thomas Vance’s entire federal indictment—the one your beloved fiancée’s family killed him to bury.”
