Chapter 8 - The Healing Process

Back in Buckhead, the sun was setting, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose.
Inside the nursery—which Madeline had spent the afternoon completely redecorating, replacing the cold, minimalist aesthetic with warm colors, plush carpets, and shelves packed with books and educational toys—Liam was playing with a brand-new wooden train set.
He was smiling. A real, genuine smile that reached his bright eyes, letting out a soft laugh as the train chugged across the tracks.
Madeline sat in a rocking chair nearby, watching him, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over her soul.
The doorbell chimed softly through the house.
Madeline walked downstairs and opened the front door. Standing on the porch was Marcus Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase and a bottle of expensive vintage champagne.
"Good evening, Madeline," Marcus smiled warmly. "I take it the board meeting went well?"
"Better than expected," Madeline replied, stepping aside to let him in. "The emergency receivership documents are signed, the corporate restructuring is underway, and federal marshals just informed me that Jeffrey was formally taken into custody outside an interstate diner an hour ago."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, pouring two glasses of champagne as they walked into the bright, modern kitchen.
"Well," Marcus said, handing her a glass. "To corporate intelligence, and to the woman who built an empire while everyone else was playing checkers."
They clinked their glasses together, the crystal ringing out with a clear, celebratory tone.
"How is Liam?" Marcus asked gently.
"He's healing," Madeline smiled, looking toward the hallway where soft sounds of train tracks clicking together drifted down. "Children are resilient, Marcus. Given safety, love, and consistency, they bounce back faster than we think. The nightmares will fade, and he'll know he never has to hide again."
"And what about you?" Marcus asked, his dark eyes meeting hers with genuine warmth. "What's next for the CEO of Cole Holdings—or whatever you plan on renaming it?"

Madeline looked out the kitchen window toward the sprawling Atlanta skyline, glittering brightly against the deepening twilight.
"Phoenix Holdings," Madeline said softly, a confident, radiant smile touching her lips. "Because some things don't just survive the fire. They rise from the ashes, stronger and brighter than ever before."
