Chapter 7 - Shadows from the Past

While Madeline was successfully securing her corporate empire, Jeffrey Cole was discovering just how fast a man’s world could turn to ash.

He sat in a dimly lit, sticky-floored diner off the interstate, nursing a lukewarm cup of black coffee that tasted like burnt rubber. His expensive Italian suit felt suffocating, his hair was messy, and his phone—once buzzing constantly with calls from investors, mistresses, and sycophants—was completely dead, having been disconnected by the carrier due to non-payment on his primary business accounts.

Across the vinyl booth sat his mother, Noelle, looking every bit of her seventy years. Her expensive jewelry was gone, replaced by a simple cloth coat, and her face was pale with shock and indignation.

"I still don't understand how this happened, Jeffrey," Noelle hissed, her voice trembling with anger. "How could that ungrateful, quiet little wife of yours outmaneuver us so completely? She was supposed to be a background player!"

"Mom, shut up!" Jeffrey snapped, slamming his fist onto the sticky table, making the sugar dispenser rattle. "Just... shut up! I didn't know, okay? She played us all. She spent two years building a separate corporate entity overseas while letting me think I was running the show. She had the forensic audits ready before she even walked through the front door!"

"And where is Cynthia?" Noelle demanded. "That little gold-digger packed her bags and took a taxi to her cousin's apartment the second she realized our credit cards were frozen! She didn't even care about you!"

Jeffrey buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, desperate sob.

He had lost his mansion. He had lost his company. He had lost his social standing, his money, and his freedom. Worst of all, he realized that the luxurious life he had taken for granted wasn't something he had earned; it was something Madeline had generously gifted him—and something she had taken away with the flick of a pen.

The bell above the diner door chimed.

Two men in dark suits walked in, their eyes scanning the room before locking directly onto Jeffrey’s booth.

Jeffrey froze. His blood ran ice cold.

The men didn't smile. They walked up slowly, flashing federal badges.

"Mr. Jeffrey Cole?" the taller agent asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Jeffrey couldn't speak. He just stared at the silver shields, feeling the last remaining threads of his old life snap completely.
