Chapter 4 - The Husband's Confessio

“You’re sorry?” I screamed, the pent-up fury finally break
ing through the ice in my chest, shattering my voice into a jagged cry. “You let your mother torture our six-year-old daughter? You covered up physical abuse? Why, Julian?!”
Julian sank onto the edge of the couch, burying his face in his hands as his shoulders shook. “You don't know what it’s like to grow up under her thumb, Chloe! My entire life, nothing I ever did was good enough. I was too slow, too soft, too heavy, too stupid. My father died when I was twelve, and Victoria molded me into a machine. When Elena started gaining a little baby fat last year, my mother cornered me. She said if we didn't fix her posture, her diet, her body shape immediately, she would cut us out of the trust completely, take away our house, and make sure we had nothing.”
“So you traded your daughter’s safety for real estate and trust funds?!” I lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of his shirt and shaking him with every ounce of strength I had left. “She is six years old, Julian! She’s a little girl! How could you watch her come home hurting and protect your mother instead of your child?!”
“I tried to talk to Mom! I told her to back off!” Julian cried, looking up at me with desperate, tear-filled eyes. “She promised she wouldn't go that far again! She said she was just ‘toughening her up’ for the real world! I was a coward, Chloe. I was terrified of losing everything, and I let her convince me that it was normal family discipline!”
“Normal?” I let go of him as if his clothes were burning my skin. I stepped back, wiping my hands on my jeans in disgust. “There is nothing normal about this. We are done, Julian. Your mother is going to prison, and you are never laying a hand on Elena again.”
Before Julian could beg or plead another word, the front door clicked open.
My heart seized. It was too early for the police, and my friend the nurse wouldn't leave yet.
Footsteps echoed softly in the foyer. A tall, imposing figure stepped into the living room, holding a briefcase and wearing an expensive wool coat.
It wasn't a police officer. It was Jonathan Moretti—Julian’s estranged older brother, who had supposedly cut ties with the family a decade ago and moved across the country to Seattle.
Jonathan stopped in the archway, looking between Julian’s tear-stained face and my rigid, furious posture. He looked exhausted, carrying a heavy weight in his dark eyes that mirrored my own.
“I see I missed the explosion,” Jonathan said quietly, setting his briefcase down on the floor. “Or did Victoria finally push things too far this time?”
Julian stared at his older brother in sheer disbelief. “Jonathan? What are you doing here? How did you...?”
“I got a call an hour ago from a private investigator I hired three months ago to keep an eye on our mother,” Jonathan said bitterly, walking further into the room. “He called me and told me that my niece was rushed to an urgent care clinic with belt marks across her back and suffocation injuries from a trash bag. And do you want to know the worst part, Julian? He told me that Victoria has been doing this to every generation of Moretti children for forty years.”
The room went dead silent. Even Julian stopped breathing.
“What... what are you talking about?” Julian stammered.
Jonathan looked down at his younger brother with a mixture of pity and deep-seated disgust. “Why do you think I cut ties with this family and left ten years ago, Julian? Why do you think I never married, never had kids, and never looked back? Do you really think I was just a rebellious teenager? Victoria did the exact same thing to me when I was six years old. She locked me in a dark pantry, starved me for days, and beat me with a belt because I failed a math test. She broke our father, she broke me, and she tried to break you. But I swore to myself that if she ever laid a hand on another innocent child in this family, I would personally tear her empire down to the ground.”
Jonathan reached into his heavy wool coat, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it onto the coffee table right in front of Julian.
“What’s in there?” I asked, my voice trembling.
May you like
“Everything,” Jonathan said grimly, looking directly at me. “Medical records from my childhood psychologist, financial records proving Victoria embezzled family trusts to silence past scandals, and signed affidavits from former household staff who witnessed her abuse over the last thirty years. The police won't just have an audio recording and photographs of Elena’s injuries. They’ll have a forty-year history of a monster operating behind closed doors.”
Julian stared at the manila folder as if it were a bomb about to detonate. All the lies, all the wealth, all the generational trauma of the Moretti family were stacked inside those cardboard pages, waiting to blow up.
