Chapter 5 - The Changing of the Guard

The transition of authority at the Vale penthouse took less than forty-eight hours, but to the financial world of Manhattan, it felt like an earthquake.

By Monday morning, the news of Celeste Vale’s arrest on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and attempted corporate poisoning had been neatly scrubbed from the main news outlets, buried deep beneath stories of market fluctuations and corporate restructurings courtesy of Graham’s media relations team. The family office issued a short, sterile statement announcing that Mrs. Vale had stepped down from her administrative roles due to personal health concerns.

The penthouse was quiet again. The cold November rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, diamond-sharp winter sun that poured through the black-framed windows, illuminating every corner of the massive living room.

Adrian stood by the glass railing at the top of the stairs, a cup of black coffee in his hand. He wore a simple black sweater and tailored dark trousers, the travel bag from Friday afternoon already unpacked and stored away in his old room down the hall.

Below him, Mara Ellis was walking toward the front door, carrying her small leather medical bag. She wore a clean, dark blue uniform this time, her hair tied back in a neat, professional knot. The bruise on her lip had faded to a light, yellow shadow, and her posture was straight, her shoulders square in a way they hadn't been since Adrian entered the apartment.

"Mara," Adrian called out.

She stopped near the console table, looking up the staircase. "Yes, Mr. Vale?"

"Dr. Harrow’s office has confirmed they are resuming full medical supervision of my father starting at noon today," Adrian said, descending the stairs slowly. "But we’re going to need a permanent, internal supervisor to manage the residential care team. Someone who knows how to spot an irregularity in the logs."

He reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping three feet from her. He pulled a white envelope from his pocket, holding it out to her.

"This is a direct contract with Vale Holdings. It includes a signing bonus equivalent to a full year’s salary at Northbridge, full legal protection under our corporate indemnity fund, and an independent residence in our midtown building if you wish to leave the agency network."

Mara looked at the envelope, her fingers tracing the smooth, heavy paper before she took it. "Why are you doing this, Mr. Vale? You don't owe me anything. I was just doing my job."

"You were doing your job while three people in this room were trying to make you invisible, Mara," Adrian said, his eyes meeting hers with a steady, quiet respect. "In my world, people who stay regular when the pressure drops are rare. I don't like losing rare assets."

"And Mrs. Vale?" she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Her lawyers were on the television this morning talking about a bail application."

"The bail application was denied ten minutes ago," Adrian said, a cold, absolute certainty in his tone. "Graham discovered that Blue Ridge Asset Management had also been using my father’s corporate shipping manifests to move unregistered medical equipment through the eastern ports. The federal district attorney has taken over the file. Celeste isn't going to see a bail hearing for a very long time."

Mara let out a slow breath, the last remaining line of tension disappearing from her face. She nodded once, a genuine, small smile touching the uninjured side of her mouth. "Thank you, Adrian."

"I'll see you at noon, Mara," he said.
