Chapter 3 - The Bedroom Sanctuary

The master suite of the Vale penthouse was located at the end of a long, gallery-style corridor lined with black-and-white photographs of the Manhattan shipping yards Harold Vale had owned before his retirement. The air here was warmer, heavy with the scent of eucalyptus and the dry, mechanical hum of an oxygen concentrator.

Adrian pushed the heavy double doors open.

The room was vast, dominated by a low-profile king bed facing the floor-to-ceiling windows. Harold Vale lay propped up on four down pillows, his gray hair thin and wild against the white linen, his frame appearing much smaller than Adrian remembered. His face was gaunt, the skin around his jaw loose and translucent. His breathing was slow, heavy, and accompanied by the soft, rhythmic click of the oxygen machine beside the nightstand.

"Dad," Adrian said, stepping into the room.

The old man’s eyelids fluttered. It took him several seconds to focus his gaze on Adrian’s face. When he did, his mouth opened slightly, but no words came out—only a dry, raspy breath.

"Adrian..." Harold whispered, his voice sounding like dry paper sliding across concrete. His right hand, covered in old IV bruises, twitched against the quilt. "You're... you're back from London."

"I'm back, Dad," Adrian said, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking his father’s cold, frail hand. The fingers were stiff, the knuckles swollen with arthritis. "Why didn't you call me?"

Harold’s eyes moved past Adrian, searching the shadows near the doorway where Celeste was standing between two security guards. "She... she said you were busy with the German merger. She said... if I disturbed you... the deal would collapse."

"The deal is finished, Dad. I've been back for twenty minutes."

"The tea..." Harold muttered, his mind drifting, his eyes losing focus as he looked toward the window where the sky had turned a dark, bruised violet. "The tea tastes wrong, Adrian. I told her... I told Mara... it tastes like copper. But Celeste said... it’s just the medicine."

Adrian’s fingers tightened around his father’s wrist, feeling the slow, irregular pulse. He looked back at Mara, who had entered the room behind him, holding her medical tablet.

"What is the daily regimen, Mara?" Adrian asked.

"He’s prescribed a low-dose beta-blocker and a mild sedative for the evening anxiety," Mara said, her voice clear and professional despite the bruise on her lip. "But for the last three weeks, Mrs. Vale has been adding a secondary vial to the morning saline line. She told me it was a vitamin cocktail from a private clinic in Switzerland. But whenever I asked for the formulation sheet to log it into the Northbridge system, she refused. When I tried to check the label on Thursday, she took the vial away and threatened to have my license revoked for insubordination."

"It was a wellness supplement!" Celeste shouted from the doorway, her voice echoing through the massive bedroom. "Harold asked for it himself after reading about the therapy in a Swiss medical journal. I don't need permission from a temporary nurse to give my husband a legal supplement!"

"A supplement that caused his orientation scores to drop from twenty-four to twelve in less than twenty days?" Adrian asked, turning his head slowly to look at her. "A supplement that coincidentally began the same week my father’s legal team requested an in-person meeting to review the amendment to his estate distribution?"

Celeste didn't answer. Her mouth formed a tight, pale line, her eyes darting toward the nightstand drawer.

Adrian noticed the movement. He reached over, pulled the drawer open, and found three small, amber glass vials without prescription labels, sitting beside a silver syringe kit. He picked one up, holding it against the light of the window. The fluid inside was clear, thick, and completely anonymous.

"Graham," Adrian said, tossing the vial across the bed. Graham caught it with one hand without looking up from his tablet. "Have the laboratory at NYU Medical Center run a full chemical analysis on this. I want a qualitative screening for digitalis derivatives and unlisted neuromuscular blockers within four hours."

"On it," Graham said, already typing.

"Adrian, you are completely out of your mind," Celeste said, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "This is an outrageous invasion of my privacy. You are fabricating a criminal case because you’ve always hated that your father chose me over your mother’s memory."

"My mother left this house with nothing but her clothes because she had too much dignity to fight a parasite, Celeste," Adrian said, standing up from the bed and pulling the quilt up to his father’s chest. "But I don't have that problem. I like the fight."

He walked toward the doorway, his eyes locked on her face until she was forced to step back into the corridor.

"Mara, switch the IV line to pure saline immediately. Use the backup kit from the sealed medical cabinet in the hall. Do not touch anything that has been opened in this room before today."

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Vale," Mara said, already moving toward the cabinet.

"And Celeste," Adrian added, stopping just inches from her. "You're going to sit in the living room with the guards while we wait for the lab results. If you try to access a phone, a computer, or even the intercom, Graham will add an obstruction charge to the federal wire fraud filing we’re preparing for your family office."
