Chapter 3 - The Midnight Eviction

The crisp night air of the upscale suburban enclave felt cleansing against Clara’s flushed face as she strapped Leo into his car seat in the back of her SUV.
The boy looked up at her through heavy, exhausted eyelids.
“Mommy... are we in trouble?” Leo whispered, his small fingers playing with the strap of his sneakers.
Clara leaned in, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to his forehead, her heart aching with a fierce, protective love.
“No, sweetheart. We are never getting in trouble again,” Clara promised softly, smoothing down his dark curls. “We’re going home. Our real home. The one where you can eat at the big table, and nobody ever tells you where you belong.”
Leo smiled faintly, his tension melting away as he leaned back against the headrest. Within minutes, the stress of the evening caught up with him, and his eyes fluttered shut as he drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Clara closed the car door quietly, walked around to the driver’s seat, and slid behind the steering wheel.
Before she could start the engine, her phone buzzed in the center console.
It was a call from Victor Sterling, her chief legal counsel and managing partner at Vance Tech Holdings. She swiped to answer, plugging her phone into the vehicle's audio system.
“Clara,” Victor’s voice came through the speakers, crisp and businesslike. “I just received your flash directive. All corporate credit lines linked to Julian Vance and the primary Vance estate have been frozen. His personal accounts are locked, and the asset seizure notices have been digitally dispatched to his civil attorneys.”
“How fast can we execute the eviction order for the estate, Victor?” Clara asked, her voice devoid of any hesitation.
There was a brief pause on the line, the sound of keyboard clicking rustling in the background.
“Legally? Because the mortgage and property taxes have been paid exclusively out of your corporate accounts for the past three years under a conditional lease agreement that Julian breached tonight... we can initiate the lockout as early as 8:00 AM tomorrow morning.”
“Make it 7:00 AM,” Clara replied coldly. “I want moving trucks on the driveway before they finish packing their designer bags.”
“Done,” Victor said. “Are you holding up okay, Clara? That’s a massive bridge to burn.”
May you like
“It wasn't a bridge, Victor,” Clara looked out the windshield toward the sprawling mansion glowing under security lights in the distance. “It was a cage. And I just set us free.”
She hung up, put the SUV in drive, and guided the vehicle smoothly down the private driveway, leaving the crumbling empire of the Vance family behind in her rearview mirror.
