Chapter 4 - The Terms of Engagement

The sun was barely cresting over the Boston skyline when Ava’s alarm went off at 5:00 AM.

She sat up in her narrow twin bed in their cramped Dorchester apartment, gasping for air as if she had just woken from a nightmare. Her fingers flew to her apron pocket hanging on the back of the door.

The thick envelope of cash was still there. Five thousand dollars.

On the kitchen counter, a handwritten note from Mila sat beside a glass of orange juice: “Gone to early math club, love you! Don’t work too hard today!”

Ava stared at the note, her chest aching. She had spent the entire night tossing and turning, wondering if Dante Salvatore’s offer—his demand—was a trap. Work for him? Doing what? Cooking? Cleaning his fortress? Serving coffee while men in suits discussed illegal shipping routes?

At 8:00 AM sharp, a knock rattled the front door of their apartment.

Ava opened it cautiously, a heavy frying pan hidden behind her back.

Standing in the hallway wasn't a hitman. It was a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal wool coat, with sharp blond hair and a clipboard tucked under her arm.

“Miss Monroe?” the woman asked with crisp, professional polish. “I am Katherine Vance, senior administrative counsel for Salvatore Holdings. My car is waiting downstairs.”

“Waiting for what?” Ava demanded, tightening her grip on the frying pan. “I haven't agreed to anything!”

“Mr. Salvatore does not negotiate terms via voicemail, Miss Monroe,” Katherine said calmly, lifting an eyebrow at the frying pan. “Your sister’s tuition for the entire academic year has been paid in full as of 7:30 this morning. Furthermore, a team of private orthodontic specialists has already contacted Boston General to schedule Miss Mila’s corrective surgery for next Tuesday.”

Ava’s jaw dropped. The frying pan slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor.

“He... he already did that?” Ava whispered, horror and gratitude warring in her chest.

“Mr. Salvatore is a man of efficiency,” Katherine replied smoothly. “Now, please grab your coat. We have a wardrobe fitting at Newbury Street before your orientation at the estate.”
