Chapter 5 - THE FINAL STAND

The gun battle lasted for an hour, but to me, it felt like a lifetime. Adrian moved with lethal precision, holding them off while I called Santos.

"They’re at the cabin!" I yelled. "Send backup!"

"We’re on our way, Isabella! Keep him alive!"

I grabbed a discarded handgun from the floor. Adrian looked at me, shocked, but he didn't try to stop me. "You know how to use that?"

"Nursing home security training," I said, my voice steady. "I know enough."

We fought back-to-back. I didn't feel fear anymore—only a cold, clear focus. We held them off until the sirens wailed in the distance. The Morettis fled, scattering into the woods.

When the dust settled, Adrian was bleeding from a graze on his shoulder. I rushed to him, tearing a strip of cloth from my shirt to bind the wound.

"You didn't have to do that," he said, wincing.

"Yes, I did," I said. "We’re even now, Adrian."

The police arrived, led by Santos, who arrested the remaining Moretti henchmen. The threat, for now, was neutralized.

Weeks later, the city of Chicago was finally safe enough to return to. Lucia’s surgery was a success, and she was recovering beautifully. I had a new life, a new job, and a newfound sense of independence.

Adrian and I stood at the train station, preparing to say goodbye.

"You’re really leaving?" he asked.

"I have a life to live, Adrian. A life that doesn't involve the mafia."

He nodded, a shadow of sadness crossing his face. "I understand. But I want you to know... you changed me, Isabella. You taught me that there is more to this world than just power."

"And you taught me," I said, smiling, "that there is more to a person than their reputation."

He reached out and took my hand. "If you ever need anything... anything at all... you know where to find me."

I turned and walked away, not looking back. I had my sister, I had my freedom, and I had a future.

The tiny blue hand in the dumpster felt like a lifetime ago. But as I stepped onto the train, I knew that that moment had defined me. It had tested me, broken me, and eventually, forged me into someone who could survive anything.

The mafia boss had tried to destroy me, but instead, he had helped me find my own strength. And as the train pulled out of the station, I finally let go of the past.

THE END
