Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF TRUTH

We drove for hours, leaving the city lights behind. Adrian was silent, his hands gripped tight on the steering wheel.
"Why are you doing this?" I asked after a long silence.
"My world is built on loyalty and blood," he said. "You saved my daughter’s life. That creates a debt that can only be paid by ensuring yours is protected."
"You could have just sent guards."
"No. The Morettis know where you live. They know where you work. They have resources I underestimated. This is a war now, Isabella, and you are no longer a civilian. You are a pawn in the Valente-Moretti conflict."
We arrived at a safe house in the mountains of Colorado—the very place Adrian had told me to hide. It was a beautiful, isolated cabin.
Over the next few weeks, something shifted. Adrian wasn't the monster I thought he was. He was a father, torn apart by the realization that he had almost lost his child because of his own circle of trust. He spent hours on the phone, coordinating defenses, cutting off the Morettis' supply chains, and systematically dismantling their operation.
But he was also human. He showed me pictures of Emma. He talked about his wife, who had died years ago, and the promise he had made to keep his daughter safe.
"I thought I was a protector," he told me one night, sitting by the fire. "I built a wall around my home, but the threat was already inside."
"You weren't to blame for Karen," I said, surprising myself by reaching out to touch his arm. "You were betrayed."
He looked at my hand, then at my face. The tension in his shoulders dropped. For a second, the mafia boss was gone, and there was just a man.
But the moment was broken by a sudden explosion outside.
"Get down!" Adrian shouted, grabbing his gun.
"They found us!" I screamed.

"Stay behind the sofa!"
Gunfire ripped through the cabin walls. I crouched in the dark, my heart hammering. I thought of Lucia. I thought of my life, gone in a flash of violence. I realized then that I wasn't just a bystander anymore. I was part of this.
