Chapter 5 - A New Beginning
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
His executive assistant, Sarah, stepped into the office, holding a small, brightly wrapped package.
“Mr. Reed? This just arrived via courier from Garfield Elementary. The return address says it’s from Lily and Clara.”
Nathan raised an eyebrow, surprised. He set his pen down and motioned for her to place it on the desk.
“Thank you, Sarah. That will be all for today.”
When the door clicked shut, Nathan pulled the package closer. He carefully tore away the brown paper. Inside was a handmade card constructed from purple construction paper, folded unevenly, with clumsy, heartfelt lettering scrawled across the front in green and pink crayon:
TO OUR FAVORITE HERO.
Inside, Lily had drawn a picture of three stick figures standing outside a brick building. One figure was wearing a tall blue suit with a very large smile. Another was a woman with brown hair. The third was a small girl holding a book.
Beneath the drawing, in wobbly first-grade handwriting, it said: You can come over for dinner anytime you want. Mom is making chicken soup, and there are two cherries for dessert.
Nathan stared at the card for a long time. The burning ache in his chest slowly dissolved, replaced by a warm, unfamiliar spark of hope.

He stood up, walked over to the coat rack, and picked up his tailored navy coat.
He didn't have a family of his own yet. But as he looked down at the childish crayon drawing, Nathan realized that sometimes, heartbreak isn't the end of a story—sometimes, it’s just the quiet space where a brand-new beginning finally gets to start.
