Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Ultimatum
By noon, the gymnasium was packed with reporters, local politicians, and smiling school board members waiting for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Reed Digital Learning Center.
Instead of a speech about philanthropy, Nathan Reed walked up to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked straight at the front row where Superintendent Thomas and Principal Caldwell sat side by side.
“Before we cut any ribbons,” Nathan began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the crowded gymnasium, “we need to talk about the real cost of education in Garfield.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Cameras flashed.
Nathan didn't hold back. He laid out the facts: the embezzled administrative funds, the falsified labor reports, and, most damning of all, the systematic exploitation of children whose parents were too vulnerable to fight back. He called out Principal Caldwell by name, detailing the exact bathroom, the exact chemicals, and the exact child who had been forced to scrub floors to protect her mother’s meager paycheck.
Gasps echoed through the room. Superintendent Thomas went the color of skim milk and stood up, shouting objections, but two of Nathan’s private security guards stepped forward, blocking the aisle.

“The Reed Foundation endowment is hereby frozen,” Nathan announced into the dead silence of the room. “Every single dollar of it. Furthermore, my legal team has already filed an emergency injunction with the state attorney general’s office for corruption, child endangerment, and labor violations.”
As the media swarmed Caldwell and the superintendent, flashing cameras blinding the disgraced administrators, Nathan stepped off the stage. He didn't care about the headlines. His mind was entirely focused on finding Clara Vance.
