Chapter 3 - A Family Chosen by LoveEight months later...

The courthouse looked very different from the cold alley where they first met.

This time, Siena wore a light blue dress.

Her brother Noah proudly wore a tiny suit.

Little Lily carried a stuffed rabbit almost as big as herself.

Judge Eleanor Hayes smiled warmly.

"Mr. Cristian Alvaro..."

"After reviewing every report, home study, psychological evaluation, and recommendation..."

"This court is honored to approve the adoption of Siena Farrow, Noah Farrow, and Lily Farrow."

Three small voices gasped together.

Cristian knelt before them.

"There's one more thing."

He pulled three small envelopes from his jacket.

Each contained a new birth certificate.

Under "Father" appeared one name.

Cristian Alvaro.

Siena stared at the paper.

Then at him.

"You really chose us?"

Cristian's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"I was the lucky one."

"You three chose to trust me."

Siena wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time since her mother died...

She allowed herself to cry.

Not from fear.

Not from hunger.

But from relief.

Two years later...

Their home was filled with laughter.

Noah had become obsessed with science.

Lily insisted on reading bedtime stories to everyone—even though she still mixed up half the words.

Siena, now twelve, earned the highest grades in her class.

One evening, Cristian found her sitting on the back porch.

She was holding an unopened carton of milk.

"You've been staring at that for five minutes," he said.

She smiled softly.

"I was remembering."

"The night everything changed."

Cristian sat beside her.

"I've wanted to ask you something."

"What?"

"Why did you steal only one carton of milk?"

She looked toward the sunset.

"Because Mom always told us..."

"If you ever have nothing..."

"...don't become someone who takes more than they need."

Cristian couldn't speak for several seconds.

Finally, he placed an arm around her shoulders.

"You honored her."

"And now..."

"You'll never have to wonder where your next meal is coming from again."

Siena leaned her head against him.

"I know."

She smiled.

"Because now..."

"...I'm finally home."

As the kitchen window glowed with warm light and Noah and Lily laughed inside, Cristian realized that the greatest investment he had ever made wasn't in a company or a fortune.

It was in three children who had taught him that family is not built by blood.

It is built by showing up when someone needs you most.

The End.
