Chapter 2 - Three Children Hidden in the ColdCristian followed Siena through the narrow alley behind the convenience store.

She walked cautiously, glancing over her shoulder every few steps as if afraid someone might change their mind and take the milk away.

At the end of the alley stood an abandoned laundromat with broken windows covered by faded plywood.

Behind the building, beneath a torn blue tarp stretched between two dumpsters, two small children waited.

A six-year-old boy held his little sister tightly.

The girl, barely four, looked pale and exhausted.

When they saw Siena, their eyes immediately fixed on the carton of milk.

"You're back," the little boy whispered.

Siena knelt beside them.

"I told you I'd find something."

Cristian stopped several feet away.

His throat tightened.

The children weren't dirty because they were careless.

They were dirty because no child should have been living outside.

The little girl looked up at him nervously.

"Is he going to take our milk?"

Cristian slowly knelt until he was eye level with her.

"No."

"I'm here to bring more."

Within twenty minutes, he returned carrying grocery bags.

Fresh bread.

Milk.

Eggs.

Fruit.

Peanut butter.

Soup.

Warm blankets.

New jackets.

The little boy stared at the food as though he couldn't believe it was real.

"Is... is all this ours?"

Cristian smiled gently.

"Every bit of it."

None of the children touched the food immediately.

Instead, they looked at Siena.

She nodded once.

Only then did they begin eating.

Not quickly.

Carefully.

As if they were afraid someone might suddenly tell them to stop.

Cristian turned away for a moment so they wouldn't see the tears gathering in his eyes.

Later that evening, Child Protective Services arrived with two police officers.

The social worker, Amanda Reeves, crouched beside Siena.

"My name is Amanda."

"I'm here to help."

Siena's expression immediately hardened.

"They'll separate us."

Amanda hesitated.

"No..."

"They always do."

Cristian looked toward Amanda.

"Is there another option?"

Amanda sighed.

"They're minors with no legal guardian."

"By law, they'll enter emergency foster care."

Siena grabbed both siblings.

"We stay together."

"No matter what."

The little boy started crying.

"I don't want another family."

Cristian stood quietly.

Then he asked one question.

"What if I became their emergency guardian?"

Everyone looked at him.

Amanda blinked.

"Mr. Alvaro... that's not a simple process."

"I'm aware."

"I have attorneys."

"I have the resources."

"And I refuse to watch these children lose each other after already losing everything else."

Amanda nodded slowly.

"We'll begin the emergency assessment tonight."

The investigation uncovered a heartbreaking truth.

Their mother had died from untreated pneumonia eight months earlier.

Their father had disappeared years before.

After their mother's funeral, a distant relative had collected the children's survivor benefits for several months before abandoning them.

Neighbors assumed another family member had taken them.

No one realized three children had quietly been surviving alone.

Siena had kept them hidden.

She cleaned restaurant tables after closing in exchange for leftovers.

Collected recyclable bottles.

Slept lightly every night, terrified someone would take her brother and sister away.

She was only ten.

Yet she had become mother, father, protector, and provider.

When Cristian read the report, he closed the file without speaking.

His attorney quietly asked,

"Are you certain about this?"

May you like

Cristian answered without hesitation.

"I've never been more certain of anything."
