Chapter 4 - The Fall of the False King

The grand ballroom of the Vance Global Tower in downtown Chicago was a glittering cavern of crystal chandeliers, clinking champagne flutes, and expensive tailoring. Three hundred of the city’s most elite investors, politicians, and media moguls had gathered for the annual winter gala.

At the center of the stage stood Nathan Cole. Dressed in a pristine tuxedo, a glass of vintage champagne in hand, he beamed under the warm glow of the spotlights as he delivered his keynote speech.

“...and as we look toward the future of Vance Global,” Nathan projected smoothly into the microphone, flashing his trademark charismatic smile, “we owe our unprecedented growth not just to our absent founder’s distant vision, but to the day-to-day leadership that has kept this ship steady, prosperous, and united.”

Polite, thunderous applause filled the room.

Nathan raised his glass in acknowledgment, scanning the crowd with triumphant pride. He had almost pulled it off. With Daniel perpetually distracted by remote acquisitions, Nathan was two weeks away from executing a hostile takeover of the voting shares that would permanently lock Daniel out of the company.

Then, the heavy oak double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang.

The music cut off instantly. Conversations died in mid-sentence. Three hundred heads turned toward the entrance.

Walking through the threshold was Daniel Vance.

He wore no smile. His overcoat was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened, and his eyes were locked entirely on the stage with the predatory focus of a tiger spotting its prey. Flanked by two federal marshals and Marcus Vance, Daniel strode down the center aisle as if he owned the very floorboards beneath his feet—which, legally and literally, he did.

Nathan’s face drained of color. The champagne glass in his hand trembled, spilling a few golden drops onto his pristine white shirt cuff.

“D-Daniel?” Nathan stammered into the microphone, his voice cracking slightly before he recovered his poise. “My God, everyone! Look who decided to grace us with his presence! Our elusive founder has finally deigned to join us from New York!”

Scattered chuckles rippled through the audience, though they quickly died down when Daniel stepped onto the stage, stopping just three feet away from his CEO.

“Nathan,” Daniel said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom without the aid of a microphone.

“Ah, cutting it close on the merger updates, are we?” Nathan laughed nervously, trying to clap Daniel on the shoulder.

Daniel caught Nathan’s wrist mid-air with a grip of steel, squeezing until Nathan let out a sharp hiss of pain and dropped his glass, shattering it against the marble floor.

“You embezzlement-driven, lying piece of garbage,” Daniel whispered, stepping into Nathan’s personal space.

“Have you lost your mind?!” Nathan hissed back, trying to maintain his dignity before the horrified crowd. “Security! Remove this lunatic from the stage!”

“Security is with me, Nathan,” Daniel replied coldly.

He gestured with his free hand toward the massive LED screens behind the stage. Suddenly, the corporate presentation slides vanished, replaced by high-resolution scans of bank wire transfers, forged signatures, intercepted emails, and the notarized NDA bearing Nathan’s handwriting from six years ago.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Several journalists in the front row immediately raised their cameras, furiously snapping photos of the financial betrayal displayed in neon-bright contrast against the dark screen.

“Recognize those, Nathan?” Daniel asked loudly, his voice ringing across the hall. “That’s five million dollars in corporate theft. That’s the price of a forged signature. And most importantly... that’s the proof of how you stole my life, lied to the woman I loved, and left my five-year-old daughter to starve on a Chicago sidewalk in January.”

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Shouts of outrage, camera flashes, and frantic whispering filled the air.

Nathan staggered backward, hitting the podium as panic seized his chest. “It’s fake! All of it is a fabrication! He’s unstable!”

“Federal marshals,” Daniel commanded quietly. “Arrest him for wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.”

Before Nathan could bolt toward the side exit, the two marshals stepped forward, gripping his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. As Nathan was dragged in humiliation past the glittering crowd of elites he had tried so desperately to impress, Daniel didn't even bother watching him leave.

His war was already won.
