Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of Betrayal

Three days later, Mary Grace stabilized in a sunlit private suite on the top floor of Mercy General, though she remained asleep. Lauren was sleeping soundly in a plush cot brought into the room, surrounded by more toys, books, and clothes than she had ever seen in her short life.

Daniel sat in a leather armchair by the window, staring out at the frozen Chicago skyline. The corporate phone in his pocket had buzzed continuously for seventy-two hours, but he had placed it on permanent silent mode.

His priority was no longer the stock market. It was retribution.

The door clicked open softly, and Marcus Vance, Daniel’s head of corporate security and a former CIA operative, stepped into the room. He closed the door quietly and handed Daniel a thick manila folder.

“You were right, boss,” Marcus said in a low, gravelly voice. “We dug into the financial records from six years ago. Nathan Cole didn't just lie to Mary Grace. He systematically sabotaged your communications.”

Daniel opened the folder. Inside were copies of certified bank statements, email logs, and wire transfer receipts.

“Explain,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

“When you left for New York, Nathan stayed behind in Chicago to liquidate the old office,” Marcus explained, pacing slowly near the window. “He intercepted every letter you sent to Mary Grace’s old address. He told her you had abandoned her for a high-society heiress in Manhattan. At the same time, Nathan was quietly embezzling seed capital from our initial venture accounts to fund his own startup side-hustle.”

Marcus pointed to a specific document in the folder.

“And when Mary Grace tracked him down six months later to tell him she was pregnant and needed your contact info, Nathan paid her off with five thousand dollars of company funds, making her sign a non-disclosure agreement under threat of legal ruin, claiming you authorized it and wanted nothing to do with her or the unborn child.”

Daniel stared at the document, the ink swimming before his eyes.

Nathan Cole had built his entire luxury lifestyle, his CEO title, and his multi-million-dollar stake in Vance Global on a foundation of stolen love, forged signatures, and calculated cruelty. Nathan was currently sitting in the Chicago corporate headquarters, preparing to sign off on a major international merger, completely unaware that his house of cards was about to collapse.

“Where is Nathan right now?” Daniel asked softly.

“He’s at the downtown headquarters,” Marcus replied, a cold smirk touching his lips. “Hosting the Q1 investor gala in the grand ballroom.”

Daniel stood up, smoothing the front of his custom charcoal suit. He walked over to the bed, gently brushing a lock of hair from Mary Grace’s pale forehead, before kissing Lauren’s cheek as she slept peacefully.

“Watch them with your life, Marcus,” Daniel instructed.

“Where are you going, boss?”

“I’m going to my own party,” Daniel said, his eyes flashing with cold fire. “It’s time to settle accounts.”
