The jury deliberated less than three hours.
Jason was convicted on multiple charges, including aggravated child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, child neglect, witness intimidation, and attempted custodial interference.
He received decades in federal prison.
Sarah accepted responsibility for failing to protect her daughter.
Rather than prison, the court ordered extensive counseling, parenting classes, supervised visitation, and years of monitored family therapy.
The judge looked directly at her.
"Fear explains silence."
"It does not excuse it."
Sarah cried harder than she had throughout the entire trial.
Michael received full legal custody of Emily.
The first months were difficult.
Emily startled whenever doors slammed.
She hid food beneath her pillow.
She asked permission before drinking water.

Michael checked her bedroom twice before sleeping.
Sometimes three times.
Sometimes more.
One evening, while tucking her into bed, Emily quietly asked,
"Dad?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Were you mad because I kept asking to stay longer?"
Michael's heart shattered.
He knelt beside her bed.
"No."
"I was blind."
"I'm so sorry."
Emily studied him carefully.
Then whispered the five words that would stay with him forever.
"I waited for you, Dad."
