Chapter 2 - The House of LiesWithin four minutes, police cars, ambulances, and child protective services surrounded the quiet suburban street.

Officer Daniel Brooks rushed toward Michael's car.
"Sir, step away from the child."
Michael carefully lifted Emily into the paramedics' arms.
She never let go of his hand.
Not once.
At the hospital, doctors made discoveries that left even veteran nurses shaken.
Emily was severely dehydrated.
She had lost nearly fifteen pounds in two months.
Her split lip had been left untreated for days.
Old bruises covered her back, arms, and legs.
Some injuries were weeks old.
Others...
Only hours.
A pediatric specialist quietly told Detective Allison Grant,
"This wasn't punishment."
"This was systematic abuse."
Meanwhile...
Crime scene investigators searched the backyard.
The dog cage contained more than dirty blankets.
They found:
Empty food cans with mold growing inside.
A small plastic water bowl filled with insects.
A notebook hidden beneath the blanket.
Inside the notebook...
Emily had written letters.
Letters she never believed anyone would read.
One page simply said,
"Dear Dad..."
"I know you're busy."
"Maybe next Friday you'll hear me."
Another read,
"I waited today."
"Maybe you came while Jason locked me outside."
The final page was stained with tears.
"I still love you."
"Please don't forget me."
Michael collapsed into a chair as detectives silently handed him the notebook.
He couldn't stop crying.
Detectives searched the house next.
Sarah was found sitting in the master bedroom.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
Ashamed.
Jason was nowhere inside.
The upstairs curtain Michael had seen...
Had been Sarah watching in fear.
She whispered,
"I thought he'd kill her if I called again."
Detective Grant looked at her sharply.
"You knew?"
Sarah covered her face.
"He threatened both of us."
"He said if I ever left..."
"...Emily would disappear forever."
Then investigators examined the swimming pool.
Divers recovered the black trash bags Mrs. Harris had described.
The neighborhood held its breath.
Fortunately...
There were no bodies.
Inside the bags were burned children's clothes...
Emily's school backpack...
Her favorite stuffed bear...
Birthday cards from Michael...
School certificates...
Family photographs.
Jason hadn't been hiding a murder.
He had been trying to erase Emily's life.
Every reminder that she belonged to anyone except him.
Security cameras from nearby homes revealed another truth.
Jason had repeatedly locked Emily inside the cage whenever Michael's custody weekends approached.

He wanted Emily too frightened and too weak to speak.
He planned to convince the court that Michael had abandoned his daughter willingly.
