Chapter 7 - Words from the Abyss

The apartment was entirely quiet once Detective Vance left. Leo had finally drifted off to sleep in his bedroom down the hall, the rhythmic hum of a white noise machine masking the silence of the night.
Ryan sat at the small kitchen table of the temporary apartment, the single overhead light casting a harsh glow across the table.
He held the envelope in his hands for a long time. The paper felt heavy, substantial, carrying the last remaining thoughts of a woman he had loved and never truly known. With a steadying breath, Ryan slid his finger under the flap and pulled out two folded sheets of lined notebook paper.
He unfolded them and began to read.
Dear Ryan,
If you are reading this, it means the world as we knew it has ended, and the secret I guarded with my life has finally been exposed to the light. I know you hate me. I know you look at me and see a stranger—a monster who deceived you, manipulated you, and brought darkness into our home.
Perhaps you are right. The mind is a fragile, broken vessel, Ryan. When I lost my first life, my first baby, something inside me fractured permanently. I tried to sew the pieces back together when I met you. You gave me so much light, so much genuine love. But the void left by a child you lost never truly closes. It festers.
When I found Maya again, it felt like the universe was offering me a second chance to correct an unforgivable cosmic mistake. I didn't mean to hurt anyone. I truly believed, in the twisted logic of my illness, that I was protecting her, keeping her safe from a world that had torn us apart. I thought that if I kept her close enough, long enough, the past would heal itself.
I know I dragged you into my nightmare without your consent. I am deeply, profoundly sorry for the pain, the confusion, and the terror I have caused you and Leo. You are a good man, Ryan—a better man than I ever deserved.
Do not look for redemption in my eyes, because I cannot forgive myself. Just remember the good moments we shared, before the shadows consumed everything.
Goodbye, Ryan.
— Claire
Ryan lowered the paper to the table. His hands were shaking slightly. A single tear slipped down his cheek, dropping onto the paper, blurring the dark ink of her signature.
There was no anger left in him—only a vast, hollow sorrow for the tragedy of it all. Claire hadn't been driven by malice; she had been consumed by a profound, untamed madness born of grief and desperation. But her sickness had nearly destroyed everyone around her.

He folded the letter carefully and placed it back inside the envelope. It was a chapter of his life that was now firmly closed, sealed away in the archives of a painful past.
Now, his only focus had to be the future. For Leo. For himself.
