Chapter 7 - The Return to the Estate

The return to the Connecticut estate a week later felt like stepping into a brand-new world.
The heavy, oppressive silence that had hung over the west wing for eighteen months was gone, replaced by the sound of running footsteps, bouncing soccer balls, and children laughing on the manicured lawns.
The antique ventilation system had been completely ripped out, replaced with a state-of-the-art medical-grade air filtration and purification network. Every lock, security log, and administrative credential on the property had been scrubbed and reset under my direct supervision.
It was a Saturday afternoon in late September.
The autumn breeze rustled through the changing leaves of the oak trees as I sat on a teakwood bench by the edge of the back garden, watching Lucas and Leo chase each other across the grass, kicking a leather soccer ball back and forth with fierce, joyful energy.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel pathway behind me.
Vincent appeared, carrying two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade. He handed one to me and sat down beside me on the bench, stretching his long legs out in front of him.
“They haven’t stopped running since we walked through the front doors,” Vincent said, a fond smile gracing his features as he watched his sons.
“Good,” I replied, taking a sip of the cool lemonade. “They have eighteen months of missed childhood to catch up on.”
Vincent turned his head, resting his chin on his hand as he looked at me. The sunlight caught the amber flecks in his dark eyes.
“You know, when you arrived at the front gates with your secondhand cardigan and your canvas suitcase, I thought you were just another temporary caregiver who would last two weeks before resigning,” Vincent said softly.
“And instead, I dismantled your board of directors and put your corrupt doctor in federal prison,” I teased, raising an eyebrow.
Vincent laughed—a rich, genuine sound that made the afternoon feel entirely perfect.
“Instead,” Vincent corrected, reaching out to gently take my hand, interlacing his fingers with mine, “you saved my family. You brought the light back into this house.”
He leaned in closer, his lips brushing softly against my cheek before lingering near my ear.

“And I never, ever want you to leave.”
I turned my head, meeting his lips in a tender, lingering kiss as the afternoon sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the estate—a home finally safe, finally whole, and finally free.
