Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

The realization that betrayal had come from inside the household—from a woman who had served the Moretti family for over a decade—hung heavy and suffocating in the hallway.

Vincent looked down at Mrs. Harper not with rage, but with a cold, terrifying disappointment.

“Who gave the orders, Martha?” he asked, his voice chillingly calm. “Who was running the operation through Blake?”

Mrs. Harper covered her face with her shaking hands, weeping bitterly. “I don't know his name, Mr. Moretti. Only a man who called himself Mr. Vance. He said... he said the boys had to remain incapacitated until the corporate merger went through. If they were healthy, the trust fund distribution would trigger early, and control of the Moretti Holdings board would split between you and the other shareholders. While they’re incapacitated, you hold full proxy control—which means you’re forced to sign away your voting rights to keep the estate solvent.”

I pieced it together instantly. “A corporate hostile takeover disguised as a medical tragedy. By keeping your sons on the brink of organ failure, they kept you distracted, emotionally broken, and financially drained, while quietly stripping your voting power through emergency corporate restructuring clauses.”

Vincent stood in absolute silence for a long moment. Then, slowly, a cold, predatory smile touched the corners of his mouth—the expression of a billionaire apex predator whose family had just been threatened.

“They thought they were playing chess,” Vincent murmured, looking down at the dispersal canister in his hand. “They didn't realize I own the board.”

He looked up at Mrs. Harper. “Pack your bags, Martha. My security team will escort you to a secure federal safehouse where you and your daughter will be placed under armed protection. If you tell the truth to the FBI tomorrow morning, you might see daylight again. If you lie, not even God will save you from what I do to traitors.”

Mrs. Harper nodded frantically, wiping her tears, and hurried away down the corridor.

Vincent turned to me, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity.

“You found what three million dollars and a dozen top-tier specialists couldn't find in eighteen months, Claire,” he said, stepping closer. “You saved my boys.”

“We haven't saved them yet,” I reminded him gently, holding up the sealed specimen cup. “This toxin has been accumulating in their tissues for over a year. We need an immediate medical evacuation to a specialized toxicology facility in Boston, completely off Dr. Blake’s radar.”

“Done,” Vincent said, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket. “I’m calling Director Vance of federal security. And I’m calling my private air ambulance.”

Within two hours, a sleek medical helicopter touched down on the estate’s private helipad.

Lucas and Leo were safely loaded aboard under my direct medical supervision, accompanied by an independent toxicology team I personally trusted from my time at Boston General.

As the helicopter blades began to spin, kicking up a fierce wind across the manicured lawn, Vincent stood on the tarmac, watching the aircraft lift off into the evening sky.

I walked up beside him.

“Aren't you coming with us?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Vincent said, turning to look down at me, his jaw set like granite. “There’s one more meeting I need to attend. A board meeting at Moretti Towers in Manhattan. Dr. Blake and his corporate handlers are expecting a routine quarterly report tonight.”

He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently resting on my shoulder.

“Will you stay with my boys in Boston, Claire? Until they’re fully recovered?”

May you like

I looked up into his eyes, seeing the exhaustion, the pain, and the fierce, enduring love of a father who was ready to wage war for his children.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said softly.
