Chapter 1 - The Hidden Garden

The Spanish sun beat down mercilessly on the immaculate white stone of the Marbella villa, casting harsh, blinding reflections across the patio. Yet, beneath the shade of an ornamental hedge, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth.
Isabella’s pink dress was torn. Her once-white shoes had disappeared beneath thick brown mud. Both of her small hands were raw, red, and covered in angry blisters.
She was struggling to drag two massive trash bags across the back garden of my villa in Marbella. The bags were almost as big as she was. But it wasn’t the dirt, the ripped dress, or even the injuries on her hands that stopped me cold. It was the look on her face. There was no anger. No shock. No expectation that anyone was coming to save her. Only the quiet surrender of a child who had already learned that asking for help changed nothing.
For the past three months, I had been in Dubai overseeing construction of a luxury hotel complex. The project finished ahead of schedule, so I decided to fly home without telling anyone. I wanted it to be a surprise. I pictured Isabella racing through the house and throwing herself into my arms. I imagined my wife, Beatriz, laughing and complaining that I had ruined whatever welcome-home plan she had prepared.
Instead, I stood motionless behind an ornamental hedge and watched my daughter struggle through filth with garbage nearly as heavy as her own body.
Then I heard laughter.
Beatriz.
Her voice floated down from the terrace above. I looked up. She was stretched comfortably across a sun lounger in a white silk robe, one hand holding a cocktail while the other pressed a phone to her ear. She didn’t look exhausted. She didn’t look concerned. And she certainly didn’t look ashamed.
Below her, Isabella fought to move the trash. Above her, Beatriz sounded entertained.
“I honestly can’t believe how easy this is,” Beatriz said. “I’ve basically got her working like a maid, and her idiot father has absolutely no idea.”
The person on the other end said something. Beatriz burst out laughing.
“No, she won’t tell him.” Her voice dropped slightly. “She’s terrified of me.” Then she smiled. “And I made sure she stays that way.”
I had spent most of my adult life sitting across tables from powerful men who could lie without blinking. My real estate company controlled more than four hundred million euros in properties across Spain. I had survived hostile negotiations, lawsuits, betrayals, and business partners who would destroy anyone standing between them and money. That career had taught me one rule above all others. Never react before you understand the entire situation.

But nothing I had ever faced in business tested my self-control like hearing those words about my daughter. Every instinct in me wanted to storm onto that terrace. I wanted Beatriz to see my face. I wanted her to know that I had heard everything. But anger would have given her a warning. If I confronted her immediately, she could deny it. She could erase messages. Destroy evidence. Invent another story. Worst of all, she could somehow make Isabella believe this was her fault.
So I stayed hidden. And I watched.
