When the presentation ended, the children surrounded Marcus and Rex with excited questions.
Mrs. Collins remained quietly at her desk.
After the students left for recess, she approached Lily.
She knelt until they were face to face.
"Lily..."
"I'm sorry."
"I judged your story instead of listening to it."
"I also embarrassed you in front of your classmates."
Lily looked toward her father.
Marcus simply smiled.
"It's your choice," he said gently.
Lily turned back to her teacher.
"My dad says everyone makes mistakes."
"What matters is what they do afterward."
Mrs. Collins wiped away a tear.
"Your father raised a remarkable little girl."
That afternoon, the principal made an announcement to the entire school.
Beginning that month, every student would have the opportunity to invite family members from different professions to share their experiences.
Not to prove themselves.
But to help children appreciate every kind of work and service.
Months later, a framed photograph hung outside the classroom.
It showed Marcus standing proudly beside Lily.
Rex sat between them wearing his service vest.

Years later, Lily would remember many things about elementary school.
