Chapter 3 – The Lie Behind the Marriage

The room went completely silent.
Mark's face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Claire, you don't understand."
"No."
I placed the document down.
"I understand exactly."
Daniel began examining every page.
Within an hour, he found what my father had suspected before his death.
Someone had attempted to alter the trust.
Someone had tried to create paperwork showing that I had transferred ownership of my assets to Mark.
The date?
Three months after our wedding.
The exact time Patricia began telling everyone that "her son was finally the man of the house."

But the biggest discovery came from an old email account.
An account my father had created for emergencies.
Inside was a message scheduled to send six years after his death.
The recipient?
Me.
Daniel opened it carefully.
My father's words appeared on the screen.
"Claire, if you are reading this, someone has attempted to interfere with the inheritance I left you."
I stopped breathing.
"I never approved any transfer involving your husband."
"If Mark or anyone connected to him presents documents claiming otherwise, they are fraudulent."
"Trust the original documents. Trust yourself."
My eyes filled with tears.
My father had known.
He had protected me even after he was gone.
The investigation revealed the truth.
Mark had been struggling financially for years.
His business had failed.
Instead of telling me, he secretly used my assets as a safety net.
Patricia had helped him.
Together, they created false documents and spread the story that Mark was the provider.
They wanted everyone—including me—to believe I depended on them.
The house.
The money.
The lifestyle.
Everything was supposed to become theirs.
When confronted, Mark finally broke.
"I was going to fix everything."
I stared at him.
"You were going to fix stealing my life?"
He lowered his head.
"I loved you."
"No."

My voice was calm.
"You loved what being married to me gave you."
