Chapter 3 – The Evidence No One Expected

Within an hour, investigators reviewed security footage from neighboring homes.
One camera captured Ethan's pickup truck entering the street twenty minutes before the emergency call.
Another showed it leaving a few minutes later.
The timestamps matched Lily's account exactly.
More importantly, Caleb could be seen climbing into the passenger seat willingly, holding his blue blanket.
He had not been kidnapped.
He believed he was going for ice cream with his father.
When confronted with the recordings, Ethan lowered his head.
"I only wanted more time with my son," he admitted.
"I knew she would never agree."
Detective Ross's expression remained firm.
"You don't get to ignore a court order because you disagree with it."
Diane tried to defend him.
"He was only trying to be a father."
"No," Detective Ross replied.
"He created panic, made false accusations against the children's mother, and interfered with an active emergency response."
The search ended safely that evening.
Caleb was found unharmed at a relative's vacation cabin, where Ethan had arranged for a family friend to watch him for a few hours without explaining the custody situation.
When I finally held my son again, he smiled innocently.
"Mommy..."
"We never got ice cream."
I laughed and cried at the same time.
"No, sweetheart."
May you like
"But we're together now."
That was enough.
