Chapter 5 - The Final Verdict

The silence that followed was suffocating.
Deborah was shaking uncontrollably, leaning against the wall for support as the reality of what they had done—what they had nearly caused—finally crashed through their self-absorbed delusions. Richard stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, realizing that no amount of smooth talking could talk their way out of this abyss.
I pulled my phone out from the pocket of my nightgown. It was fully charged, connected to a secure cloud network, and currently recording every single second of audio and video in the room.
"The police are five minutes away," I announced calmly, tapping the screen to confirm the emergency dispatch tracker. "Along with Child Protective Services, my father's corporate legal team, and a judge handling emergency restraining orders."
Travis’s head shot up, his face stained with snot and tears. "Police?! Elena, we're family! You can't call the police on your own husband and family! We can go to counseling, we can—"
"Family doesn't leave a woman in high-risk labor to rot on a hardwood floor for a handbag," I stated, my voice as unyielding as granite. "You made your choice three hours ago when you walked out that door and slammed the deadbolt. Now, you get to live with the consequences."
The wail of distant sirens began to wail through the quiet suburban neighborhood, growing louder with every passing second, cutting through the damp evening air like a judgment.

I looked down at my son and daughter. They stirred slightly against my chest, warm, breathing, and safe.
As the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers began to paint the living room walls in dancing, dramatic strokes, Travis buried his face back into the bloody floorboards, weeping for a life that was already gone, while I sat straight and tall on the sofa, holding the future in my arms.
