CHAPTER 2 – THE TABLE THAT FINALLY BROKE

Claire drove in silence.
Neither Noah nor Lily asked another question.
She stopped at a small family diner fifteen minutes away, the kind with cracked leather booths and handwritten pie specials on the wall. The waitress noticed the children's red eyes and quietly brought them two hot chocolates without charging.
"These are on me," she whispered.
Lily wrapped both hands around the warm mug.
"Mom..."
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Grandma doesn't love us, does she?"
Claire's heart cracked.
"No, baby."
Lily looked surprised.
Claire reached across the table.
"She loves herself more than she knows how to love anyone else."
That was the truth.
Not one Claire had been brave enough to admit before.
Her phone buzzed again.
Mom.
Declined.
Dad.
Declined.
Vanessa.
Blocked.
Another voicemail appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
By the tenth voicemail, something felt...different.
The messages weren't angry anymore.
They were frightened.
Claire finally pressed play.
Her mother's breathing came in sharp gasps.
"Claire...please answer...your father...he...he collapsed..."
Claire frowned.
Collapsed?
Another message.
"It's your father! He can't breathe! Please!"
Then another.
"The ambulance is here!"
Claire stared at the phone.
Noah looked up.
"Grandpa's sick?"
"I don't know."
Before she could think further, an unknown number called.
She answered.
"This is Lieutenant Harris with the Madison Township Fire Department."
Claire straightened.
"Yes?"
"Were you recently at Richard Collins' residence?"
"Yes."
"We found your number listed as next of kin."
"What happened?"
"There appears to have been a severe allergic reaction."
Claire blinked.
"Allergic...to what?"
"We're still investigating."
Forty minutes earlier...
After Claire walked out, silence filled the dining room.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Good."
"She's always looking for attention."
Patricia forced a smile.
"Everyone eat before the food gets cold."
Richard carved another piece of chicken.
Then he coughed.
Once.
Twice.
His face reddened.
Patricia frowned.
"Richard?"
He grabbed his throat.
The fork hit the plate.
His chair crashed backward.
Within seconds he couldn't breathe.
Vanessa screamed.
Someone called 911.
Children started crying.
The entire room dissolved into chaos.
At the hospital...
Doctors worked frantically.
Richard had unknowingly eaten pecans hidden inside a homemade stuffing recipe Vanessa had brought.
Richard had a life-threatening tree-nut allergy.
Everyone in the family knew it.
Except...
Vanessa had forgotten.
She had copied a recipe from social media without reading every ingredient.
The irony was brutal.
The man who had declared Claire's children deserved leftovers now lay unconscious because of food prepared for his own favorites.

Claire looked through the diner window.
Snow had begun falling.
For the first time in years...
She didn't rush back.
May you like
She finished dinner with her children.
Because they deserved one peaceful meal.
