Chapter 10 - The Architect and the Accountant

Six months after the night in the diner, the penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan was quiet, save for the soft, rhythmic patter of rain against the glass.
Scarlett sat at the grand mahogany dining table, her laptop open, reviewing the final quarterly audit for Vance Global Enterprises. The numbers were clean, balanced, and bulletproof.
Across the table, Julian sat reading a dossier on a new real estate acquisition, but his eyes kept drifting away from the papers and toward her.
"You're working too late," Julian said quietly, closing his folder.
"I'm balancing the books, Mr. Vance," Scarlett replied without looking up from her screen. "Someone has to make sure your empire doesn't implode from within."
Julian stood up, walked around the table, and gently reached down to close the laptop lid.
Scarlett looked up, startled, as he leaned down and pulled her gently to her feet.
"The books can wait until morning," Julian whispered, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a warmth that completely dismantled the ice king persona the rest of the world feared.
"And if I refuse?" Scarlett challenged, a playful, defiant smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
Julian smiled back—a genuine, unguarded expression that changed his entire face.

"Then I'll just have to remind you," he murmured, pulling her close against his chest as the city lights flickered below them, "that while you might audit my company... you'll never audit my heart."
And for the first time in her life, Scarlett Monroe didn't need to do the math to know she was exactly where she belonged.
