Chapter 6 - The Broken Music Box
Among the splintered ruins of the wooden cedar chest near the window, something small and glittering caught the morning light.
I walked over slowly, my knees trembling, and knelt down in the debris. Lying half-buried beneath a pile of torn clothing was the old oak music box Marcus had given me on our anniversary. The brass clasp had been forced open, and its interior lining was ripped out.
Beside it lay a small, waterproof micro-SD card—the hidden core of the ledger Robert and Marcus had killed to possess.
I picked up the micro-SD card, the tiny piece of plastic feeling heavier than lead in my palm. For three years, this little chip had been the shadow hanging over our lives, the hidden anchor dragging us down into fear and poverty.
Dominic stepped up beside me, kneeling down on the dusty floor. He looked at the card in my hand, then up at my face.
“What are you going to do with it?” he asked quietly.
“Give it to you,” I said without hesitation, holding it out toward him. “You’re the only person who can make sure it destroys them the right way. I don't want money, Dominic. I don't want revenge. I just want my daughter to grow up without looking over her shoulder.”
Dominic looked down at my open palm. Instead of taking the card immediately, he gently closed my fingers around it, his warm hand enclosing mine completely.
“You keep it safe until we get back to the estate,” he said. “Then, my legal team will hand it directly to the federal prosecutor handling the RICO indictments against Robert’s faction. By tonight, their entire network will be dismantled.”
I let out a long, ragged breath, the tears finally falling—not of sorrow, but of the sudden, overwhelming realization that the nightmare was truly over.

Dominic offered a faint, rare smile—a genuine, softening expression that completely transformed his stern face. “Your daughter told me I needed someone, Elena. It turns out she was right about a lot of things.”
