Chapter 5 - THE FALL AND THE RISE

A year after the day my life shattered in the hospital, my life was rebuilt into something indestructible.

Derek Morrison was a ghost. True to his cowardly nature, the moment he realized the scope of Luca's power, he fled the state. I heard through the grapevine that he was working at a second-rate car dealership in Nevada, drowning in debt, completely alienated from the circles of wealth he used to obsess over.

Brittany had married someone else, abandoning Derek the moment his bank accounts froze.

Justice hadn't come screaming. It had come quietly, efficiently, at the hands of the man who now held my heart.

It was Aria’s first birthday.

The Moretti estate was transformed. Luca had flown in decorators from Italy to turn the sprawling gardens into a massive, fairy-tale wonderland. There were thousands of blooming flowers, a carousel, and a guest list that included politicians, businessmen, and a few men with very dark sunglasses who brought impossibly large gifts.

Aria was running unsteadily across the lawn in a beautiful white lace dress, giggling hysterically as Mateo—the terrifying head of security—chased her with a stuffed teddy bear.

I stood on the terrace, watching them, holding a glass of champagne. I wore a crimson silk dress that Luca had picked out for me, feeling more confident and beautiful than I ever had in my life.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Luca pressed a warm kiss to my bare shoulder.

"She is happy," Luca murmured, watching Aria tackle Mateo’s leg.

"She is spoiled," I laughed, leaning back against his solid chest. "You bought her a pony, Luca. She’s one."

"A miniature pony," he corrected with a smirk. "And she is a Moretti. She deserves the world."

Luca turned me around to face him. The playful smirk faded from his lips, replaced by a deep, burning intensity that still made my breath catch in my throat.

He reached into his jacket pocket and took a step back, dropping slowly to one knee.

The chatter on the lawn seemed to stop. The music faded into the background. My hands flew to my mouth as tears instantly sprang to my eyes.

Luca opened a small velvet box, revealing a diamond ring so magnificent it caught the afternoon sun and scattered light across the terrace.

"A year ago, I wrote my name on a piece of paper to protect you," Luca said, his voice carrying clearly over the silent gardens. "Today, I want to ask you to take my name, not for protection, but because I cannot imagine a single day of the rest of my life without you by my side."

He looked up at me, the fearsome crime boss, the untouchable billionaire, completely vulnerable on his knee.

"Emma, will you marry me? Will you let me be Aria’s father, officially, in the eyes of the law, and in the eyes of God?"

"Yes," I sobbed, dropping to my knees right in front of him, ruining my silk dress on the stone patio. "Yes, Luca. A thousand times, yes."

He slipped the ring onto my finger, his hands shaking just slightly, before pulling me into a fierce, breathless kiss.

The gardens erupted in applause and cheers. I heard Aria squeal in delight, clapping her tiny hands as Mateo carried her up the terrace stairs.

Luca broke the kiss, laughing as he took Aria from Mateo and hoisted her onto his shoulders. She grabbed a fistful of his dark hair, smiling down at us with bright, innocent eyes.

CONCLUSIONThey say heartbreak doesn't come screaming. It wears a suit and smells like betrayal.

But salvation doesn't scream either.

Salvation wears a tailored navy blazer, carries the weight of a violent world on his shoulders, and speaks in a quiet voice that makes the darkness retreat.

We were married three months later in a private ceremony in Tuscany. Luca adopted Aria legally, cementing what we already knew in our hearts—she was his daughter, entirely and completely.

Years later, when Aria was old enough to ask about the day she was born, we didn't tell her about the man who walked away. We told her about the man who stepped out of the shadows, took a pen from a terrified nurse, and rewrote the stars to bring us home.

And as I watched my husband teach our daughter how to ride her horse in the fields of our estate, I knew that the empty space on that birth certificate was never meant for Derek.

It was just waiting for the right man to fill it.
