Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Six months later.

The gardens of Blackthorne House were in full bloom, the vibrant colors a stark contrast to the darkness of that winter night.

I stood on the terrace, watching Caleb play with a new puppy on the lawn. His laughter drifted up to me—a sound that reminded me of how far we had all come.

Dominic stepped out onto the terrace, a glass of bourbon in his hand. He stood beside me, watching our son.

“The accounts were finally liquidated,” he said. “They’re in a blind trust for Caleb.”

I looked at him, feeling a weight lift from my shoulders that I hadn't realized I was still carrying. “What about the name? Mara Ellis?”

“You can keep it, if you like,” he said, turning to look at me. “Or you can be someone else. Someone who doesn't have to hide.”

I looked out at the horizon, at the city that had once been my cage and was now my home.

“I think I’ll keep the name,” I said, smiling for the first time without the need to hide it. “It’s the name I earned.”

Dominic reached out, taking my hand. We stood there as the sun began to set over the Hudson, casting long, golden shadows over the estate.

The past was behind us, buried in the history of the families that had tried to destroy us. But the future—the future we had carved out of the chaos—was just beginning.

I wasn't a maid, and I wasn't a fugitive.

I was Mara Mercer, and for the first time in my life, I was finally, truly free.
