Chapter 5 - The Surprise in the Hallway

The private jet touched down at Chicago Executive Airport just after dawn on Thursday, cutting through a thick layer of morning mist. A waiting black town car whisked Thomas down the interstate toward the estate, the gray autumn landscape blurring past his window.

During the drive, his mind raced with a strange, unfamiliar cocktail of anxiety and hope. What would he say to Lucas? How would his son react to seeing him unannounced? For two years, Thomas had been a distant figure—a voice on a phone screen, a man who arrived with expensive gifts from foreign cities only to vanish again before the wrapping paper could hit the recycling bin.

And then there was Clara. Who was she, really? How had she unlocked a door inside his son’s soul that was bolted shut to everyone else?

When the Bentley passed through the iron gates and crunched up the gravel driveway, the house looked the same from the outside—immense, austere, and silent. Thomas instructed the driver to wait by the front, deciding instead to enter through the rear service entrance. He didn't want a grand reception from Mrs. Gable or a fuss made over his unexpected return. He wanted to see his son naturally. Unscripted.

He held a small, flat shopping bag in his right hand—a luxury item he had purchased at a boutique in Geneva during a brief window before his flight: a limited-edition, die-cast Italian sports car that Lucas had once pointed to in a catalog months ago.

Thomas pushed open the heavy wooden back door, stepping quietly into the back hallway that led past the kitchens and into the main wing of the manor.

The house was astonishingly quiet. No vacuum cleaners running, no hushed instructions from nannies. Just the distant sound of wind rustling the autumn leaves outside.

He rounded the corner near the base of the grand staircase, stepping out into the vast expanse of the main living room—and stopped dead in his tracks.

The luxury sports car slipped from his fingers, hitting the Persian rug with a soft, muffled thud.

In the center of the room stood Clara. But she wasn't wearing her usual quiet, unassuming expression. She had an old, frayed floor mop tied securely around her head with a red ribbon, the long cotton strands cascading down her back like a wild, tangled mane.

She was pretending to be a roaring dinosaur.

"Rooaaar!" Clara bellowed dramatically, stomping her boots against the floorboards, throwing her arms around like jagged claws, and lurching forward with wild, theatrical abandon.

Lucas was sitting on the rug, laughing so hard he couldn't even sit up. He was doubled over, clutching his stomach, his face flushed bright red with pure, unadulterated joy.

Clara stumbled backward, tripping over her own feet with incredible slapstick precision, and collapsed onto the sofa in a heap of dramatic defeat, groaning, "Oh no! The mighty T-Rex has been defeated by a vicious tickle monster!"

Lucas squealed with delight, scrambling across the floor like a joyous little animal.

And while Thomas watched, completely invisible in the shadow of the archway, Lucas did something he hadn't done for any living soul since the world ended two years ago.

He crawled up onto the sofa, threw both arms around Clara’s neck, and buried his face against her shoulder, holding onto her as if she were the only real thing in a world made of glass.
