Chapter 4 - A New Language

The transition was not what Tessa expected. She wasn't becoming a "mob wife" or a henchman. Salvatore’s world was quiet, efficient, and surprisingly orderly. He needed someone to manage his communications—not the loud, frantic shouting matches of his competitors, but the quiet, strategic negotiations that happened behind closed doors.

She learned that Salvatore’s "deafness" was a tactical advantage. He could sit in a room, watch body language, read lips, and gather information while his opponents argued, thinking he couldn't hear them. Tessa became his voice.

She learned to interpret his hands, his subtle flickers of expression, and his commands. In return, she taught him things about the world she had seen from the perspective of a waitress—the way people really felt when they thought no one was watching.

Life became a series of high-stakes meetings. They moved through boardrooms and warehouses. And everywhere they went, the silence followed them. People learned to fear the girl who signed next to the most dangerous man in Chicago.

One evening, they were in a warehouse, negotiating a deal that would secure her brother’s future and protect their operations from a rival syndicate. Brett, out of a job and desperate, had started working for the competition. He was there, acting as a translator for the rival group.

When he saw Tessa, he laughed. "Look at this. The waitress is playing big shot."

Tessa didn't respond with words. She watched him. She saw his eyes flicker toward the side door, toward the crate where an armed man was hidden.

She turned to Salvatore and signed, The man by the door has a weapon. Brett is betraying the negotiation.

Salvatore didn't move. He kept his face blank, his eyes locked on the rival leader. He signed back to her, I know. Let them wait.

When the rival leader made his move, Salvatore was ready. He had anticipated the betrayal because Tessa had tipped him off to the shift in the air. The situation was resolved in seconds, not with gunfire, but with precision and force.

Brett was dragged out, his face pale with terror. Tessa walked past him, pausing for only a second.

I told you I wasn't better than anyone, she signed, her expression calm. But I was certainly better than you.
