Chapter 2 - THE AWAKENING OF THE GIANT

“Mr… Mr. Bellandi…” Arthur choked out, his voice shaking so violently it sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. He lowered himself into a clumsy, trembling bow—a gesture so entirely out of place for a modern hotel doorman that Clara froze.

Julian Vance, who had followed them into the library with two burly security guards trailing behind him, sneered loudly.

“Arthur! Have you lost your mind?” Julian barked, stepping into the room. “Get this vagrant and his brat out of the hotel immediately. And Clara, consider this your final warning—abandon your station again and you’re fired before your shift ends.”

Julian motioned to the guards. “Throw them out into the snow.”

The two massive security guards stepped forward, reaching out rough hands toward the stranger’s shoulders.

In a fraction of a second, the heavy, melancholic air around Luca Bellandi vanished, replaced by an aura of absolute, terrifying lethargy turned predatory. He shifted his daughter slightly into his left arm, shielding her face against his chest, and moved with a terrifying, panther-like speed.

He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't yell.

With a single, blindingly fast motion, Luca caught the first guard’s wrist, twisted it inward with a sickening pop of bone, and swept the second guard’s legs out from under him, sending the 240-pound man crashing hard onto the antique Persian rug.

The entire confrontation lasted less than three seconds.

Julian Vance stepped back in absolute horror, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “Assault! You’re—you’re assaulting hotel staff! Security! Call the police!”

“Call them,” Luca said softly. His voice didn't rise above a conversational tone, yet it carried the dead weight of an executioner’s verdict. He pulled a heavy titanium card case from his inner coat pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of Julian.

Julian’s shaking hand reached down to pick it up. He glanced at the embossed platinum crest—a stylized crown interwoven with a double-headed serpent, stamped with the stamp of the Global Zenith Holdings Corp.

Beneath it read: LUCA BELLANDI – MANAGING DIRECTOR & SOLE PRINCIPAL.

Julian’s knees buckled. The card slipped from his fingers, landing softly on the carpet. The Global Zenith Holdings Corp. wasn't just a conglomerate; it was the parent company that owned The Grand Meridian, along with forty-six other luxury hotels across North America and Europe, shipping ports in three countries, and a sprawling empire of private equity firms that effectively controlled half the commercial real estate in downtown Chicago.

More quietly, within the dark underbelly of the city’s financial and political elite, the name Bellandi was spoken only in hushed whispers. They were the apex predators—the syndicate lords who had transitioned from old-world syndicates into legitimate corporate titans, maintaining absolute control over the city’s docks, unions, and financial networks.

And Julian Vance had just tried to throw the supreme head of the empire out into a blizzard.

“Mr… Mr. Bellandi,” Julian stammered, dropping into a frantic, groveling bow. “I—I had no idea! The system registry—there was an administrative error—please, let me personally escort you to the penthouse—!”

“Shut up,” Luca said.

The two words dropped like lead weights. The silence in the library was absolute, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the soft, steady breathing of the little girl sleeping against Luca’s chest.

Luca looked down at Clara, who was standing quietly beside the sofa, stunned by the sudden turn of events. His hard, dangerous expression softened just a fraction as he looked at her.

“You gave my daughter your shawl,” Luca said, his voice lowering. “You gave her your warmth when everyone else in this building treated her like garbage.”

“She was cold,” Clara repeated simply.

Luca turned his gaze back to Julian Vance. The hotel manager was now sweating profusely, trembling so hard his teeth were clicking together.

“Arthur,” Luca said, addressing the elderly doorman who was still standing near the door.

“Yes, Mr. Bellandi?” Arthur answered respectfully.

“Is Mr. Vance still employed by The Grand Meridian?”

Arthur swallowed hard. “No, sir. Effective immediately.”

“Correct,” Luca said coldly. He turned back to Julian, who opened his mouth to beg for mercy. “Get out of my hotel. Take your uniform off in the lobby before you leave. If I see you within five miles of any property bearing the Bellandi name again, you won't have to worry about employment ever-more.”

Julian didn't argue. He turned and practically fled the room, tripping over his own patent-leather shoes in his haste to escape.

The two security guards, groaning in pain, picked themselves up off the floor and scurried out behind him without a single word.

Luca turned back to Clara. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy, old-fashioned gold pocket watch on a thick chain, checking the time. Then he looked up, his dark eyes steady.

“Clara Hayes,” Luca said, surprising her by knowing her name. “How much does this hotel pay you?”
