Chapter 2 - The Senator’s Confession

Daniel didn't blink. He rested his hands on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the neon reflections of the city flashing across the windshield.

“You knew who I was when your son’s friends enrolled at that university,” Daniel said, his voice level and flat.

Senator Eleanor Beltran let out a dry, humorless laugh from her secure line in Washington. “Daniel, do you really think a boy like Maurice could orchestrate an attack that thorough—wiping university server logs, overriding campus security feeds in under three minutes, and silencing three local precincts—without professional backing?”

The steering wheel groaned under Daniel’s grip. “You helped them.”

“I protected my investment,” Eleanor corrected sharply. “And more importantly, I managed a liability. You thought you could bury yourself in Queens, wearing flannel and selling spark plugs, and the world would just forget that you hold the keys to the entire eastern seaboard’s shadow economy? Please. Power doesn't retire, Daniel. It only hibernates.”

“My daughter has nothing to do with our past, Eleanor.”

“Doesn't she?” The senator’s tone dropped to a chilling whisper. “Twenty years ago, when you dismantled your network, you left behind a vault of untraceable assets—billions in liquid capital, land deeds, and incriminating federal documents. Marcus Thorne survived the fire you set. He didn't die, Daniel. He built an alliance. And he’s been using your daughter to draw you out of the dark.”

Daniel felt the blood rush to his ears. “Marcus...”

“Marcus wants his empire back,” Eleanor said. “And my son, along with the Cordova and Varela boys, were merely the instruments used to deliver a message. They broke her jaw because Marcus knew you’d come looking for them. He knew you’d make a threat. He wanted The Ghost back on the board so he could execute a checkmate.”

“And you?” Daniel asked softly. “What do you get out of selling your own son’s safety to a monster like Marcus?”

“My son is a fool who plays at being a god,” Eleanor said coldly. “I care about the Senate seat, the committee chairmanships, and the preservation of my family’s dynasty. Marcus promised me absolute immunity and infinite campaign financing if I let him use my security clearance to stage the campus cover-up. But let’s be honest, Daniel—I didn't call you to debate family values. I called because I know what happens when you’re backed into a corner. And frankly? I’d rather bet on the devil I know than the lunatic who’s currently trying to hijack my state.”

“Where is Marcus?” Daniel asked.

“Locker 214,” Eleanor replied without missing a beat.

Daniel stopped breathing. Locker 214. The number stamped on the silver key hidden in Renata’s backpack.

“Grand Central Terminal,” Eleanor continued. “Basement level service corridor. There’s a private terminal locker there that hasn’t been opened since 2005. Marcus has been using it as a dead-drop for your daughter. He thought if he got close to her, he could force her to reveal where you stored the original master ledgers.”

“If my daughter so much as gets a papercut between now and dawn, Eleanor, I will personally dismantle your entire political dynasty piece by piece until you’re begging for a prison cell,” Daniel whispered, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of an absolute promise.

“I wouldn't expect anything less,” the senator replied, and the line clicked dead.
