Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

The following morning at 9:00 a.m., the grand foyer of the Coyoacán estate was stripped of its aristocratic pretense. The morning sun filtered through the dust-covered skylights, illuminating the leaks in the ceiling and the peeling wallpaper Doña Teresa had spent years trying to hide from her high-society friends.

The heavy iron front gates were struck with three thunderous, metallic blows that rattled the leaded glass windows.

"Federal Police!" a voice roared from the cobblestone street. "Open the door!"

Rodrigo did not move from the velvet sofa where he had spent the night staring at the wall. Doña Teresa stood near the grand staircase, her mink coat clutched tightly around her shoulders as if it could shield her from the law.

The lock splintered with a sharp, heavy force, and six uniformed federal agents, flanked by investigators from the Financial Intelligence Unit, poured into the foyer. At the front of the squad was Lucía Barrera, accompanied by her senior legal team and two private moving coordinators carrying industrial lockboxes.

"Nathaniel... I mean, Rodrigo Larios," the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, money laundering, identity theft, and domestic assault under the statutory provisions of the Federal Penal Code."

Rodrigo offered no resistance as the steel links clicked tightly around his wrists. His arrogant posture was completely gone, replaced by the hollow, broken gaze of a man who had lost everything before he even realized the war had begun.

Doña Teresa rushed down the stairs, her manicured fingers clawing at the agent’s sleeve. "You can't do this! This is a historic estate! You have no right to enter my property!"

"It isn't your property anymore, Teresa," Lucía said, her voice carrying a calm, absolute finality that silenced the older woman's shrieks.

Lucía reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out a certified, stamped document from the Public Registry of Property. "The seventy-two-hour compliance window for the Santa Fe Investment Accord expired at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Because your son’s firm defaulted on the compliance audit due to the federal asset seizure, the collateral clause has automatically executed."

She slid the document onto the entry table.

"The deed to this estate and one hundred percent of the shares of Larios Architects now belong entirely to the Barrera Trust," Lucía announced. "You have exactly sixty minutes to pack a single suitcase of personal clothing before my moving team seals the property for foreclosure liquidation."

Teresa sank onto the bottom step of the staircase, her historic name, her expensive coat, and her aristocratic pride evaporating into the cold morning air of the house she had lost to a girl from Puebla.

Rodrigo lifted his head, looking at his wife through the space between them. "Lucía... please. You loved me once. You can't leave us in the dirt like this."

Lucía walked over to him, stopping just inches away. She didn't look at him with anger; she looked at him with the complete, clinical detachment of a surgeon removing a tumor.

"I didn't leave you in the dirt, Rodrigo," Lucía whispered, her voice as steady as granite. "I just reminded you that the dirt is where you belong. Take them away."
