3. The Secrets Hidden Behind White Walls

Richard barely slept.

The image of his son falling peacefully asleep in Emma's arms replayed every time he closed his eyes. It wasn't just that the baby had stopped crying. It was the way Emma had held him—with effortless instinct, as though protecting him had become second nature.

By sunrise, Richard had already made a decision.

He wanted answers.

Not assumptions.

Not explanations carefully arranged by someone else.

Real answers.

Instead of going to his office, he walked into the mansion's security room.

The security supervisor, Daniel, immediately stood.

"Good morning, Mr. Hale."

"I need the recordings from yesterday."

Daniel nodded and began pulling up the files.

Hours of footage appeared across several monitors.

Richard watched silently.

Emma could be seen feeding the baby, changing his blankets, walking slowly through the nursery while humming softly whenever he became restless.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing threatening.

She rarely looked at her phone.

She barely left the nursery except when another employee replaced her for meals.

Richard continued watching.

Then something caught his attention.

"Pause."

Daniel froze the image.

One hallway camera had skipped nearly twenty minutes.

Richard frowned.

"What happened here?"

Daniel looked confused.

"I... I'm not sure."

"Check the backup."

Daniel typed quickly.

Another screen appeared.

The same gap.

Richard's expression darkened.

"Has this happened before?"

Daniel searched through older recordings.

Several more gaps appeared.

Always from cameras nearest the nursery.

Always late at night.

Always on nights when Olivia had insisted on personally taking care of the baby.

Daniel swallowed.

"I've never noticed this."

Richard didn't answer.

He simply stared at the missing footage.

Someone hadn't forgotten to save those recordings.

Someone had erased them.

Emma sat quietly in the mansion's small staff lounge.

A cup of tea rested untouched beside her.

Her wrists still ached whenever she moved them.

The older housekeeper, Margaret, entered carrying a fresh towel.

She stopped beside Emma.

"You should put something cold on those."

Emma smiled faintly.

"I'll be fine."

Margaret looked toward the closed door before lowering her voice.

"I've worked here twenty-two years."

Emma remained silent.

"I've seen people lie."

Another pause.

"I've also seen frightened people tell the truth."

Emma looked down at her hands.

"I don't want anyone getting hurt."

Margaret frowned.

"Then why won't you tell Mr. Hale everything?"

Emma's lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Instead, tears quietly filled her eyes.

"I promised."

"A promise to whom?"

Emma slowly shook her head.

"I can't."

Margaret reached across the table and gently squeezed her shoulder.

"You may not have much time left."

Emma knew she was right.

Meanwhile, Olivia entered Richard's office carrying two cups of coffee.

"You skipped breakfast."

Richard accepted neither cup.

"I reviewed the security footage."

Olivia remained perfectly composed.

"And?"

"There are missing recordings."

She shrugged lightly.

"Technical issues happen."

"Only outside the nursery?"

"It isn't exactly unusual."

Richard leaned back.

"Emma says she tried to talk to me."

Olivia smiled sympathetically.

"Richard... she's manipulating you."

"You kept saying she was unstable."

"Because she became emotionally attached."

Richard folded his arms.

"You also said she was the one feeding Noah."

"I assumed she was."

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened one of the security clips.

Emma appeared preparing a bottle.

Seconds later another nanny entered and took it from her before feeding the baby herself.

Clip after clip showed the same thing.

Emma cared for Noah.

Someone else fed him.

Richard slowly looked up.

"You said she spent the most time feeding him."

Olivia's expression remained calm.

"I must have remembered incorrectly."

Richard watched her carefully.

Olivia almost never remembered anything incorrectly.

That afternoon Richard walked into the nursery alone.

The room smelled faintly of baby lotion and freshly washed blankets.

Everything looked perfectly organized.

Too perfect.

He opened drawers one by one.

Nothing.

Diapers.

Clothes.

Medical records.

Extra bottles.

Then he noticed something odd.

One drawer refused to close completely.

He pulled it out.

A folded envelope had become trapped behind the wooden frame.

It had no name.

No address.

Only one word written across the front.

Richard.

His heartbeat quickened.

He unfolded the paper.

The handwriting belonged to Emma.

Mr. Hale,

If you're reading this, then I probably failed to speak to you again.

Please don't leave Noah alone with Olivia.

I know how impossible that sounds.

I know you have no reason to believe me.

But if anything happens to me, promise you'll look at the hospital records yourself.

Don't trust copies.

Ask for the originals.

You'll understand why I've been trying to stay close to him.

I'm sorry.

Richard read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

There was no accusation.

No demand.

No attempt to defend herself.

Only one request.

Check the original hospital records.

A quiet knock interrupted his thoughts.

James stepped inside.

"Sir..."

Richard folded the letter into his pocket.

"What is it?"

"The pediatrician has arrived for Noah's routine examination."

Richard nodded.

As he walked toward the door, his hand remained in his pocket, fingers wrapped tightly around Emma's letter.

For the first time since his son's birth, he wasn't heading toward the nursery looking for reassurance.

He was looking for the truth.

And deep inside, he was beginning to fear that the truth had been living inside his own home all along.
