“Please,” she said to Elena. “Just today.”
Victor’s chest tightened as Elena slowly sat down.

A crystal vase crashed onto the marble floor.
Every face turned toward him.
“Dad?”
Victor stepped into the room.
Before anyone could explain, the front door opened again.
His sister Marianne entered carrying a thick white envelope.
She looked at Elena.
Elena went pale.
Marianne placed the envelope in front of Victor and said quietly:
“There. That face. She knows.”
Victor didn’t touch the envelope.
“What am I supposed to find?”
Marianne’s eyes never left Elena.
For the first time since Victor had walked into the room, Elena no longer looked calm.
She looked afraid.
