Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Fog

We moved quickly up the basement stairs, the air in the kitchen feeling cold and tense.
Through the French doors that looked out over the backyard, the thick fog was rolling in from the lake, turning the manicured lawn into a landscape of shifting, ghostly shapes. The headlights of a large vehicle flickered through the trees near the carriage house.
"Richard Harris," Elena whispered, her eyes fixed on the driveway. "He must have come back for the files."
"Stay here, Dr. Jenkins," one of the officers said, pushing me gently behind the kitchen island. "Vance, we’ll take the flank."
The kitchen door creaked open.
A tall man in a dark cashmere coat stepped into the room. He was in his mid-forties, with silver-rimmed glasses, a sharp jawline, and the athletic build of a man who spent his weekends on the golf course. He looked like the picture of suburban success, but his eyes were wild, his hair disheveled, and his hands were covered in dark, wet mud.
"Martha?" he called out, his voice hoarse and urgent. "Martha, where are the keys? The police are at the hospital! We need to leave!"
"Richard Harris!" Elena’s voice rang out like a gunshot in the quiet kitchen. "Police! Put your hands on your head and step away from the door!"
Richard froze. He looked at Elena, then looked at the two uniformed officers who had stepped out from the hallway, their weapons aimed directly at his chest.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then, Richard’s hand drifted slowly toward the pocket of his cashmere coat.
"Don't do it!" Elena warned, her finger tightening on the trigger of her Glock. "Show me your hands, Richard!"
Richard let out a dry, rattling laugh. "You think you can stop me? You think you can take everything I’ve built because of that... that broken animal in the basement?"
My blood ran cold. Broken animal.
"He’s your son!" I screamed, stepping out from behind the kitchen island before the officers could stop me. "He is an eight-year-old boy who trusted you! You chained him to a floor and let him rot!"
Richard’s gaze snapped to me, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses. "You're the doctor from the ER. The one who couldn't mind her own business. If you had just given him the antibiotics and let Martha bring him home, he would have died peacefully in his sleep. It would have been over. For everyone."
"You're a monster," I said.
"I’m a businessman," Richard said, his hand suddenly diving into his pocket.
Pop!
The sound of a taser prongs firing echoed through the kitchen. One of the uniformed officers had fired, the metal prongs catching Richard directly in the chest.
Richard gasped, his body stiffening as five thousand volts of electricity surged through his muscles. He collapsed backward through the glass of the kitchen door, the shards shattering across the marble floor as he hit the ground, groaning in pain.
Elena rushed forward, cuffing his hands behind his back before he could recover.
"Richard Harris, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and financial fraud," Elena said, her voice cold as she pulled him up from the broken glass.
As they dragged him out of the kitchen, Richard looked back at me, his glasses gone, his face smeared with blood and mud.
"You haven't saved him, doctor," he hissed, his voice echoing through the fog. "He’s broken. He’ll always be broken. You just made us pay for the trash."
I stood in the ruined kitchen, the cold wind blowing through the shattered glass door, my hands shaking as I held my grandfather's old medical bag.
May you like
But behind my ribs, the door of that old, painful memory finally closed. I hadn't let this one go. I had fought for him.
And we were going to make sure he survived.
