Six months later, the Carter Family Foundation Bistro had become the most celebrated culinary institution in the Midwest—not because of high-society exclusivity, but because of its mission.
Every Monday, the bistro closed its doors to regular paying customers and opened its kitchen to feed hundreds of underprivileged families, single parents, and children in need, fully funded by the permanent trust Vincent Kane had established in Rory’s name.
Mara stood behind the counter, handing out warm meals with a radiant, confident smile. She was no longer a terrified, exhausted night-cleaner living in the shadow of debt; she was a respected philanthropist, a successful businesswoman, and a pillar of the community.
And out on the sidewalk, watching through the sparkling front windows, Vincent Kane stood beside Julian Vance in the crisp autumn air.
“You’re not going inside, boss?” Julian asked, adjusting his trench coat.
Vincent shook his head slowly, keeping his hands tucked inside his coat pockets. “No, Julian. They don't need a protector anymore. They built their own fortress.”
