Chapter 6 - The Confession

The quiet that followed was suffocating.
I stood near the edge of the grand foyer, holding a sleeping Mia against my shoulder, my entire body trembling from the adrenaline crash. The threat was gone, but the reality of what had just happened hung heavily in the air. Marcus Vance was dangerous, and by protecting us, Alessandro had made an enemy for life within his own family.
"You shouldn't have done that," I whispered, staring down at the floor. "You gave up your voting bloc. You risked your entire position in the company just to..."
"Just to what?" Alessandro interrupted softly.
I looked up. He was standing only a few feet away. The cold, impenetrable billionaire mask was entirely gone, replaced by an exhaustion and a quiet intensity that took my breath away.
"Just to protect us," I finished, my voice barely audible. "Why? We're nobody, Mr. Duca. I'm just the maid who broke the rules."
Alessandro took a slow step toward us. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray curl away from Mia’s sleeping forehead before his hand moved to cup my cheek. His touch was warm, deliberate, and fiercely tender.
"You were never 'just the maid,' Elena," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "From the first moment your daughter crawled into my office and grabbed my tie, she didn't see a billionaire or a ruthless executive. She saw someone she trusted. And in my world, trust is the rarest commodity of all."
I swallowed hard, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What happens now?"
"Now," Alessandro said, a faint, genuine smile finally breaking through his stoic expression, "we rewrite the protocols."
Over the next month, the penthouse changed in ways no one on the board could have anticipated.

Alessandro didn't fire me; instead, he officially promoted me to estate operations manager, quadrupling my salary, providing full health benefits, and legally integrating a dedicated, fully furnished family suite into the penthouse floor plan. The secret nursery behind the laundry shelves was replaced by a sunlit, professionally designed nursery overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
The tabloids speculated endlessly about the sudden ouster of Marcus Vance and the mysterious restructuring of Duca Holdings, whispering about corporate coups and secret alliances. None of them ever guessed that the catalyst for the multi-billion-dollar shift was an eight-month-old baby girl who had decided the most feared man in New York needed a playmate.
