Chapter 3 – What the Cameras Revealed
That evening Michael met with the head of household security.
"I want every recording from the last ninety days."
The security director hesitated.
"Sir..."
"They disabled several visible cameras."
"I know."
"What they didn't know..."
"...was that Sarah insisted we install backup cameras inside the landscape lights after a burglary years ago."
Hour after hour, Michael watched.
Olivia yelling.
Emma crying alone on the back steps.
Matthew secretly making sandwiches because his sister had been denied dinner.
Megan locking away birthday gifts Michael had mailed from Europe.
Olivia smiling sweetly during every scheduled video call.
The contrast made Michael physically ill.
The next morning his attorney arrived.
"So did Child Protective Services?"
Michael nodded.
"I asked them to interview the children with specialists."
"They deserve professionals."
The interviews were heartbreaking.
Neither child exaggerated.
Neither child sought revenge.
They simply described life under Olivia.
"We weren't allowed to tell Dad."
"She said he'd stop loving us."
Michael lowered his head.
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
His attorney quietly placed several documents on the table.
"The engagement is legally over."
"The trust has been revoked."
"The gifts have been returned."
Olivia stormed into the room.
"You believe children over me?"
Michael answered calmly.
"I believe evidence."
He pressed one button.
Security footage filled the television.
Olivia's own words echoed through the room.
"Your father believes everything I tell him."
