Chapter 2 - The Shadow Behind the Smile

The west parlor was supposed to be a sanctuary, but as the heavy oak door clicked shut and locked behind us, it felt more like a holding cell.
"Mommy," Emma whispered, her small fingers clutching the frayed hem of my maid's uniform. "Are we in trouble?"
"No, sweetheart. You did the right thing," I murmured, kneeling down to wrap my arms around her. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs.
The "shiny lady" Emma had mentioned didn't require much guesswork. Elena Vance.
She was Damiano Moretti’s fiancée—a stunning, impeccably polished socialite from old New York money, the daughter of a shipping tycoon whose alliance was supposed to cement this historic peace treaty tonight. Everyone in the mansion worshipped the ground she walked on. Everyone except Emma, who had apparently witnessed something she never should have seen while wandering near the private wing.
Through the tall, reinforced windows, I could hear the faint, muffled hum of luxury cars pulling up into the grand circular driveway below.
The five Mafia dons had arrived.
Downstairs, men who controlled billions of dollars in real estate, shipping, and contraband were walking into a building where a high-grade military explosive was currently taped beneath the very table where they were supposed to sign away their rivalries.
Ten agonizing minutes ticked by on the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the parlor.
Then, the heavy brass door handle turned.
I pulled Emma behind me instinctively, my breath catching in my throat.
The door pushed open, and Damiano Moretti stepped inside.
He had discarded his suit jacket. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, corded muscle and faint scars from a life soaked in violence. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, and his obsidian eyes burned with a cold, terrifying fury that could strip paint off the walls.
In his right hand, he held a sleek, palm-sized digital detonator, wrapped carefully in a sterile evidence bag.
"Mr. Moretti," I started, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. "I swear, she didn't mean to wander out—"
Damiano ignored me completely. He walked right past us, his gaze locking onto Emma, who peeked out from behind my skirt.
He stopped a few feet away and knelt down on one knee, bringing himself down to her eye level.
"Emma," Damiano said, his voice unusually soft, carrying a strange, resonant gravity. "Can you tell me what the shiny lady was wearing when she spoke to you?"
Emma blinked, her big, innocent eyes studying his face. "A sparkly green dress. And she had a silver bracelet that jingled like bells."
Damiano’s jaw tightened so hard I could see the muscle leap beneath his skin.
"Thank you, little one," he whispered. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently resting on her head for a fleeting second before he stood back up and turned his attention to me.
"Take your daughter to the secure suite on the fourth floor," Damiano ordered, his tone shifting back to the absolute, unyielding commander of an empire. "My head of security, Marco, is waiting outside. He will escort you. No one leaves this estate tonight."
"What are you going to do?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
May you like
Damiano looked toward the door, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corner of his mouth.
"I'm going to invite our guests inside," he said quietly. "And then, I'm going to show them what happens when someone tries to blow up my home."
