Chapter 6 - The Architect of Escape

The amber beam of my tactical flashlight cut through the heavy dust of the underground vault, casting long, jittery shadows against the damp limestone walls.
"Forty minutes," Maria whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she stared up at the iron ventilation grate. "He’s going to blow up the entire house. My little girl—Sofia is sleeping upstairs in the west wing staff quarters!"
"Listen to me, Maria," I said, grabbing her by the shoulders and forcing her to look directly into my eyes. Panic was a luxury we didn't have time for. In my world, panic was fatal. "We are not going to die down here. Do you understand me?" ရှင်မေးတယ်...
She swallowed hard, nodding slowly, the raw terror in her eyes steadying into grim resolve. "What do we do?"
"Marcus thinks this vault is a tomb because he only understands digital security and corporate contracts," I said, turning back toward the wall safe and sweeping my flashlight beam across the stonework behind the open steel door. "He doesn't know the history of this estate."
"What do you mean?"
"My grandfather built this mansion during the height of the Prohibition wars in the 1920s," I explained rapidly, running my gloved hand along the rough mortar joints of the back wall inside the safe cavity. "He wasn't just a businessman; he was a smuggler who anticipated betrayal from every angle. He never built a room without a second way out."
I pressed my palm firmly against a specific stone bearing a faded chisel mark near the bottom left corner of the safe interior.
Click.
With a hollow, heavy grinding sound, a section of the stone wall nearly three feet wide began to pivot inward on hidden iron counterweights, revealing a pitch-black, narrow tunnel sloping downward into the earth.
A draft of cool, damp air rushed out from the opening, carrying the distant smell of running water and river silt.
"The old smuggling drainage tunnel," I breathed, a grim smile touching the corners of my mouth. "It leads half a mile underground straight out to the drainage culvert near the riverbank outside the estate gates."
Maria stared at the dark opening in sheer disbelief. "It goes past the perimeter security?"
"Past the cameras, past the guards, and past Marcus's trap," I said, pulling two spare tactical flashlights from my jacket pocket and handing one to her. "Take this. Grab the manila envelope with David’s files and the hard drives from the safe. We’re leaving."
Without wasting another second, Maria reached into the open safe, swept up the records, zipped them securely inside her waterproof backpack, and gripped her flashlight.

"What about Sofia?" she asked, her voice cracking with motherly terror as we stepped into the mouth of the tunnel. "If Marcus triggers the gas line in forty minutes, she’ll still be inside the mansion!"
"We aren't running away, Maria," I said, cocking my Glock and checking the magazine slide with a sharp metallic clack. "We are going around the back door. And when we get back inside that house, Marcus Vance is going to learn why men twice my age stopped whispering when they said my name."
