Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

The medical wing at Blackwood Estate was sterile, quiet, and felt like a tomb. Elena was stable, but the doctors were cautious—a combination of pneumonia, malnutrition, and years of stress had pushed her to the brink.

I stood in the observation window, watching Emma sleep on a small cot in the corner of the room.

Harold walked up behind me, his footsteps heavy. "We analyzed the footage from the docks, sir. The attackers… they didn't just stumble upon us. They had a tracker. A high-frequency signal."

I felt the shift in my gut. "A tracker on whom?"

"Not on the girl," Harold said, his voice dropping. "On the car you took to the docks."

My eyes narrowed. Only three people had access to that car. Only three people knew I was heading to the docks in that specific vehicle.

"Bring me the security logs from the garage," I said.

"I’ve already checked them, sir. The log was wiped."

I turned to him, the reality settling in. "Who wiped it, Harold?"

Harold stood silent. He had been my right hand for a decade. He had stood with me when my father died. He had watched me build this empire from nothing. But as he looked at me, I saw the hesitation—the flickering of a man who had been bought.

"They have my family, Dante," he whispered. "They’ve had them for weeks. They knew about Elena. They knew you’d go to her."

I didn't yell. I didn't rage. I felt a cold, empty void open up in my chest. "You told them where she was?"

"I had to."

"And what happens now, Harold?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Do they want me to walk out to the gates and wait for them to finish it?"

"They want the girl," Harold said, tears welling in his eyes. "They think she’s the key to the offshore accounts you hid years ago. They think you gave them to Elena."

I looked back at the window. Emma was stirring, her small hand clutching the sheet. She was the key. Not because of money, but because she was the only thing I had left that mattered.

"Go to them," I said. "Tell them I’ll bring the girl to the harbor at midnight. Tell them I’ll come alone."

"Dante, they’ll kill you."

"I know," I said, stepping away from the glass. "That’s exactly what I’m counting on."

I walked back into the room, approaching the cot. Emma opened her eyes, looking at me with that same trust I didn't deserve.

"Is mommy better?" she asked.

"She will be," I said, stroking her hair. "Emma, I need you to be very brave. I have to go away for a little while, and Harold is going to take you and your mommy to a safe place. You have to listen to him. Promise me."

She looked at me, a flicker of understanding in her eyes that made me ache. "Are you coming back?"

May you like

"I’m going to make sure you’re safe," I answered.

It was the most honest thing I had ever said.
