Part 4: The Memory They Tried to Kill

Victor Kane ended the call and lowered his phone.

Rain streaked across the windshield of the black sedan parked opposite St. Vincent Medical Center. The hospital windows glowed against the midnight sky, every floor reflecting pale light onto the wet pavement.

He watched Room 814 through a pair of military-grade binoculars.

Inside, Marina Carter—once known as Mara Ellis—was alive.

That was a problem.

Eight years ago, she had been a frightened eighteen-year-old girl standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Today, she was the only living witness who could destroy an empire worth billions.

Victor started the engine.

He had failed once.

He would not fail again.

Inside Room 814, Mara drifted in and out of sleep.

Pain medication blurred the edges of reality, but something refused to stay buried.

Smoke.

She smelled smoke.

Not hospital disinfectant.

Smoke.

Then came another smell.

Diesel fuel.

Burning rubber.

Her breathing became uneven.

The heart monitor sped up.

Caleb, asleep in the chair beside her bed, stirred.

"Mara?"

She didn't answer.

She wasn't in the hospital anymore.

Eight years earlier...

The Carter Logistics warehouse echoed with shouting.

Her father stood in the main office, arguing with three men in expensive suits.

"You'll never own this company."

One of the men smiled.

"This isn't about buying it anymore."

Marina had been carrying a box of accounting files when she stopped outside the office door.

She knew she shouldn't listen.

But then she heard a name.

"Mercer."

One of the men leaned forward.

"Dominic Mercer already signed."

Her father's face hardened.

"I don't believe you."

The stranger calmly placed a document on the desk.

"There."

Her father glanced at it.

His face changed.

Marina had never seen fear in him before.

Then another voice came from behind her.

"Boss."

Victor Kane entered carrying two fuel cans.

Marina gasped softly.

Victor's eyes snapped toward the hallway.

Toward her.

For one terrifying second...

They looked directly at each other.

Back in the hospital—

Mara bolted upright.

"No!"

Pain exploded through her chest.

The monitors screamed.

Nurses rushed inside.

"Easy!"

"Don't move!"

Dominic entered seconds later.

"What happened?"

Mara grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

"I remember."

The room became silent.

"I saw them."

Dominic's expression sharpened.

"Who?"

She swallowed painfully.

"The men who burned my family's warehouse."

Arthur stepped closer.

"You remember their faces?"

She nodded.

"One of them..."

She closed her eyes.

"...mentioned your name."

Dominic froze.

"My name?"

"They said..."

She struggled to breathe.

"They said Mercer had already agreed."

The room seemed to stop.

Callum looked directly at Dominic.

Neither man spoke.

Finally Dominic asked quietly,

"Do you believe it?"

Mara looked into his eyes.

"No."

"If you had wanted my family dead..."

"...I wouldn't still be alive."

Dominic exhaled slowly.

"Someone used my name."

Two hours later, Callum returned with a stack of old corporate records.

"We found something."

He spread faded documents across the hospital conference table.

Eight years earlier...

Mercer Holdings had attempted to purchase Carter Logistics.

Negotiations had collapsed.

Three days later...

Someone forged Dominic Mercer's electronic authorization.

The forged document approved a hostile takeover.

Then, twenty-four hours later...

The warehouse burned.

Dominic stared at the forged signature.

"It's convincing."

Callum nodded.

"Very."

Arthur frowned.

"So whoever planned this wanted two things."

"They wanted Carter Logistics."

"And they wanted Mercer blamed."

Dominic's eyes darkened.

"Someone started a war..."

"...using my name."

Across the city...

Victor Kane entered an abandoned factory.

Several armed men waited inside.

At the far end of the room sat a gray-haired businessman drinking whiskey.

He never looked up.

"You failed."

Victor remained silent.

The older man calmly placed his glass on the table.

"I paid you to erase one witness."

"Instead..."

"...she's now under Dominic Mercer's protection."

Victor clenched his jaw.

"I'll finish it."

The older man smiled faintly.

"No."

He slid another folder across the table.

"This has become bigger than one woman."

Victor opened it.

Inside were recent surveillance photos.

Dominic.

Caleb.

Marina.

Arthur.

Callum.

Every movement documented.

Victor looked up.

"Who's financing this?"

The older man finally met his eyes.

"The same people who financed the warehouse fire."

Victor turned another page.

His face slowly lost all color.

"Impossible..."

"They're still alive?"

The businessman smiled.

"They never left."

Back at St. Vincent Hospital...

Caleb quietly climbed onto Mara's bed despite the nurses' protests.

He carefully hugged her without touching the bandages.

"I had another bad dream."

Mara smiled weakly.

"What happened?"

"I dreamed the bad men came back."

She gently stroked his hair.

"And then?"

"You weren't there."

Her eyes softened.

"I'm here now."

Caleb nodded.

"I know."

He looked toward Dominic.

"Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Can Mara come home after she gets better?"

Dominic looked at the woman who had taken three bullets meant for his son.

Then he answered without hesitation.

"She's already home."

Mara looked away, overwhelmed.

For eight years she had lived without a family.

Now, in the least likely place imaginable—a fortress ruled by the most feared man on the East Coast—she had found people willing to risk everything to protect her.

But none of them knew that another secret still waited beneath the ashes of the Carter warehouse.

A secret hidden inside a missing ledger.

A ledger containing the names of every powerful businessman, judge, politician, and crime boss who had financed one of the largest criminal conspiracies in the country.

And someone else had just found it first.
