Chapter 5 - The Upper East Side Settlement

By the first week of November, the transition was complete.

Annalise Brooks did not return to the kitchen. Under a series of sealed corporate decrees signed by Mercer Holdings, she was appointed as the Sole Custodian of the Mercer Children's Trust—a clean, legitimate foundation holding over three hundred million dollars in real estate assets, including a four-story limestone brownstone on East 74th Street.

She wore a simple, tailored cream wool coat as she stood on the terrace of the brownstone, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant, professional knot. Her shoulder still twinged when the cold wind blew off the East River, but the thin, pale scars on her skin were no longer marks of hiding. They were certificates of ownership.

Beside her, Caleb was busy organizing a set of small wooden alphabet blocks on the stone table, his pronunciation clear and confident as he spoke to his new guardian.

"Look, Annalise," Caleb said, pointing to the letters. "Château. That means castle, right?"

"Right, sweetie," she said, kneeling to adjust his wool scarf. "A castle with thick walls so the rain can't get in."

The glass doors behind them opened, and Dominic stepped out onto the terrace. He wore a heavy black overcoat, his dark hair damp from the afternoon mist, his face showing the quiet, dangerous satisfaction of a man who had just finished cleaning the streets of his enemies.

"The Lombardi family in Brooklyn has signed the territorial waiver," Dominic said, his voice dropping into that familiar, low vibration that always made her heart skip a beat. "Julian Vance tried to use their shipping lanes to bring forty men into the harbor last night. Victor met them at the pier. Julian is currently on a private transport back to Illinois—in a pine box."

Annalise looked down at her hands, then looked up into the gray eyes of the man who had torn apart half of the East Coast underworld to keep her safe.

"And the ledger?" she asked quietly.

"The ledger has been delivered to the Eastern District federal prosecutor," Dominic said, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "The Vance family will be spending the next thirty years explaining their accounting methods to a grand jury. You don't have to look down anymore, Annalise. The world is looking up at you now."

He reached out, his thick, scarred fingers catching her hand, his thumb tracing the small scar on her wrist where the kitchen knives had once left their mark.

"Caleb needs a mother who knows how to fight," Dominic whispered, pulling her close against his side as the cold winter wind swept through the towers of Manhattan. "And I need a woman who knows exactly how dangerous the dark can be."

Caleb looked up from his blocks, his large brown eyes bright with an absolute, unquestioning trust, and as the three of them stood together above the glittering lights of the city, Annalise knew that the maid from Blackthorne House had finally found the only house where she belonged.
