Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Six months after the trial, the transition was complete.
The grand suburban mansion where Daniel and Vivian had tried to cage me was sold at auction, the proceeds divided between charity funds for abuse survivors and restitution for the clients the Costellos had swindled. My father’s trust, fully restored and legally fortified, was now under my exclusive control, serving as the seed capital for a new pro-bono legal foundation dedicated to helping women trapped in invisible cages of financial and physical abuse.
On a crisp Saturday morning in May, I stood on the polished hardwood deck of a newly purchased penthouse apartment overlooking the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan.
The lake breeze caught the ends of my hair, cool and refreshing against my neck. Beneath my lightweight silk blouse, the scars on my back were fading into silver lines—reminders of a battle I had fought, bled through, and ultimately won.
My phone chimed on the patio table beside my coffee mug.
It was an email notification from the state bar association, confirming the formal reinstatement of my license to practice federal law under my maiden name: Victoria Vance.
I picked up the mug, taking a slow, appreciative sip of my coffee as I watched the white sailboats glide across the blue horizon.
