Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Six months later, the sprawling stone estate of Rosewood Manor felt entirely different.

The cold, intimidating iron gates were still secure, but the atmosphere inside had shifted from a fortress of isolation into an actual home. The formal gardens were no longer trimmed for showy society galas; instead, a section of the lawn had been cleared out to build a brightly colored wooden playground with a pink slide and a sandbox.

In the main kitchen, the morning sunlight poured through the large bay windows, casting a golden glow across the marble countertops.

Lucia stood by the stove, flipping pancakes while listening to the sound of laughter echoing down the grand hallway.

The heavy oak doors of the study opened, and Alexander walked into the kitchen carrying Sofi on his shoulders. Sofi was wearing a superhero cape made from a red dish towel, giggling hysterically as she steered his head like a racecar driver.

"Faster, driver! Faster!" Sofi squealed.

"If I go any faster, your cape is going to achieve lift-off," Alex laughed, setting her down gently onto one of the high kitchen stools.

Lucia turned around, plating a stack of pancakes smothered in maple syrup and fresh strawberries. She handed the plate to Sofi, then looked up at Alex, her eyes warm with a quiet, abiding gratitude that words could no longer capture.

"You're spoiling her, Mr. Ward," Lucia said softly, wiping her hands on her apron. "She thinks she's the CEO of this estate now."

"She is the CEO," Alex corrected smoothly, taking a cup of black coffee from the counter. "She has a controlling share in my sanity. That makes her outrank everyone, including me."

Lucia smiled, a soft, natural expression that made her face light up in a way that made Alex’s breath catch for a fraction of a second—just like it had six months ago when he first looked into her eyes across the garden.

The federal trial against Genevieve and Marcus had concluded two weeks prior, resulting in lengthy prison sentences and the complete seizure of their illicit assets. The media circus had long since faded, leaving the estate in profound, uninterrupted peace.

Alex took a sip of his coffee, leaning against the counter beside Lucia. He watched Sofi happily attack her pancakes, then turned his gaze toward the open French doors leading out to the sunlit garden.

"The board of directors wanted to hold our annual charity gala here next month," Alex murmured, shaking his head. "I canceled it."

Lucia glanced at him sideways. "Why? The foundation needs the press."

"I don't need press," Alex said quietly, turning his head so his eyes met hers. "And I don't need a grand estate filled with strangers wearing expensive masks." He reached out, gently brushing a stray curl away from Lucia’s forehead, his touch lingering for a heartbeat longer than necessary. "I think... I'd rather spend the evening sitting on the back patio, eating pancakes, and listening to your daughter explain why rabbits should rule the world."

Lucia’s cheeks flushed a soft, rosy pink, but she didn't pull away. Instead, a quiet, radiant smile bloomed across her face.

Across the lawn, the spring breeze rustled through the young oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine. The past was buried, the lies had been stripped away, and for the first time in his life, Alexander Ward knew that home wasn't a fortress you guarded from the world—it was the place where you finally felt safe enough to lower your shield.
