Chapter 7 - Process, Not Charity

Within ten minutes, the wailing sirens of emergency services echoed outside the Mercer estate gates.
Paramedics entered the ballroom first, followed closely by local police officers. Lena tried politely to wave them off, insisting repeatedly that she was fine, but the lead paramedic took one look at the deep purple bruising swelling across her shoulder and shook his head.
“You’re going to the hospital for an evaluation, young lady. That’s a severe impact trauma; you could have ligament damage or a hairline fracture.”
Adrian stepped forward, his tone businesslike and protective. “Will she lose any pay for missing her shifts while receiving medical care?”
The estate manager, standing nervously nearby, answered instantly. “Good heavens, no, Mr. Mercer. Full pay, naturally.”
Margaret stepped in, adding a crucial legal distinction. “She will be paid for tonight, for every scheduled shift she misses while recovering, and all medical expenses will be covered in full by the estate’s liability insurance.”
Lena immediately stiffened, looking at Margaret with anxious pride. “Mrs. Mercer... I appreciate it, but I don’t want charity.”
Margaret met her gaze levelly. “It isn't charity.”
Silence held the small circle of onlookers.
“You were physically injured while performing your duties inside this house,” Margaret said firmly. “That creates a legal and moral responsibility. We are fulfilling an obligation, not handing out favors.”
Lena nodded slowly. That mattered deeply to her. There was no theatrical savior myth here, no billionaire writing an arbitrary magic check because she looked sympathetic on television. It was a workplace injury, medical documentation, proper compensation, and corporate accountability.
As the paramedics prepared to escort Lena out to the ambulance, Adrian stepped closer. “Do you want me to come with you to the hospital?”
Lena looked startled, her eyes widening. “Goodness—no, sir. That’s entirely unnecessary.”
“Alright,” Adrian nodded respectfully. “Then someone from the household staff will accompany you to ensure you’re looked after.”
Lena turned and looked at Maya, another young server who had quietly stayed by her side through the entire ordeal. “Can Maya come with me?”
May you like
“Of course,” Adrian said.
Maya grabbed her coat from the locker room, and the two young women walked out together into the cool November night.
